Sad to admit this about Mazi Smith

One thing I have noticed is that you don't see much of anything nice in any prospect.
I liked Schoon just 1-2 rounds later and OG Terrence was sitting there for us. I like O but curious where and how he will play since he seems like a Jayron player. Like Fehoko fine. Vaughn was probably my favorite pick but curious why we take the CB and pass over Trice, Ricks, and a few others myself and other scouts thought were better. And before anyone says…well our scouts know better….they also got us Joseph and Wright over vastly better players available

That's what I keep saying also. At some point it has to translate to the game.
Yeah there’s some that say “well he wasn’t asked to rush the passer and whatnot…”
But I can’t get over that it looks like he’s always the LAST one moving from the snap, and I never saw him just bullrush and blow through OL. I didn’t see teams feel like they needed to double team him and I saw TCU run right past him over and over. His career highlight reel is only about six plays long and his stats are pretty underwhelming. I hope we get more out of him but I have huge concerns and he cost us a first round pick. The last time we like a DL more than everyone else despite weak college tape…we got Hill. …or Taco.

Scheme wise Mazi wasn't asked to do much but he will be asked to do a ton as a round 1 pick. That's why Dallas and others rely so much on the measurables and RAS and weight lifting contest. Because that is measurable. The art form of drafting good players is tabulating a list of the RAS stuff and then turn on the tape and see if it translates. As Jimmy J used to say I don't care if the guy can win the Olympics if he can't play football. Mazi may turn out to be great. His film is avg to slightly above avg. Coaches will have to make something of him bc the traits are there. There are principles that I wished Dallas would follow almost exclusively:
1) Draft captains, position group leaders and non injured guys
2) when in doubt draft someone from Alabama Clemson Georgia or Ohio State
3) Skill position guys must have tape of being a good football player. Don't get caught up in measurements
4) never trade up. Always try to make as many selections or trades for draft capital
5) Always take one small school lesser known type at the end of the draft that your scouts just have a feeling about or a feel good guy

It's funny. Schoon has the highest separation stats amongst TE and people think he does t by magic instead of athletic ability.

So you didn't like it. Just like I said you act malcontent.

I keep reading about his size and strength, agility, quickness, and power but I see none of it on his game tape.
You need to watch tape of Michigan, not Ohio State. You got your schools mixed up.

I guess if they forgot how to measure and weight people at the combine this could be an issue. I doubt they did.

I have a feeling DQ will have Mazi be more of an attacking 1-gap 1T which would help show his athleticism. It's my understanding that UM had him playing more 2-gap. I've seen a LOT of video where Mazi did the whole read & react thing and he would end up in the backfield a split second late to make the TFL or sack.

The size discrepancy absolutely flipped when everyone stood up - Mazi DWARFED McCarthy. so, Mike must have his chair positioned higher than everyone else LOL
