SAN ANTONIO – Dallas Cowboys play-caller Bill Callahan has a message for those blaming Tony Romo for the interception that allowed Green Bay to complete its improbable comeback last week: Get off his back and jump on mine.

The Packers rallied from a 23-point third-quarter deficit to win 37-36 after converting the turnover into a go-ahead touchdown with 1:31 left. Speaking to reporters in Irving for the first time since the game, Callahan insisted Thursday that Romo simply “followed the rules” when he chose to pass in a situation that begged for a run.

“That’s the option,” Callahan said of the play he sent in with just under 3 minutes left. “It’s not so much a check as it is an option he has to (throw) to a receiver who is being covered man-to-man when the box gets loaded up. He has that option, per se.”

Romo dodged linebacker Clay Matthews to throw a pass to Miles Austin that cornerback Sam Shields intercepted. Seven plays later, Eddie Lacy scored on a 1-yard run to give Green Bay the lead by the final score.

“It more or less falls on me,” Callahan said of the interception. “I’ve got to structure a better play and a better design and try to eliminate that option for him in those situations.”

Callahan said he should have instructed Romo to forget about the pass option and run the ball.

“I put that on myself just because it was built into the play,” Callahan said. “That’s how I look at it. We can do better. I can do better, certainly.”

For his part, Romo said he should have simply allowed Matthews to sack him after he burst into the backfield untouched.

“You just go by your rules, and you look to run in certain looks and you look to pass in other ones,” Romo told reporters. “Obviously, like I said before, if you could do it again you wouldn’t make the same choice. More than anything, it came up a little differently because I had to make a guy miss, and you just got to eat the ball at that point.”
