CHICAGO – You can’t blame this one on Tony Romo.
The Cowboys’ 45-28 loss to the Bears on Monday night was all about a defense that got dominated by Josh McCown and his band of tall receivers.
The Bears scored on eight of their nine possessions. They led by as many as 28 points (42-14) early in the fourth quarter and converted 8 of 11 third downs.
Romo passed for just 104 yards on 11-of-20 accuracy, but he threw three touchdowns without an interception. Still, he said he deserved blame along with the defense.
“It’s a team game,” he said. “It takes everybody. We didn’t do as well as we should have in all three phases.”
Coach Jason Garrett agreed.
“It’s a team loss. Let me make that abundantly clear,” Garrett said. “…You have to match them. You can’t go three and out like we did right before the half. You have to convert third downs and keep drives alive.”
But, again, this one was about the defensive’s horrendous effort more than anything.
Orlando Scandrick and Bruce Carter dropped interceptions. Sterling Moore managed to hang on to one, but a holding penalty against Brandon Carr negated it. George Selvie got whistled twice for roughing the quarterback.
As a result, Josh McCown passed for 348 yards and four TDs without a turnover. As a result, the Bears’ two big receivers, Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, caught a combined 11 passes for 184 yards and one TD. As a result, Matt Forte produced 175 all-purpose yards.
Bottom line: This wasn’t Romo’s fault. This one was on the defense.
