Safety Class!

Each year there are usually 1-2 good safeties that come off the board in the 25-40 range. This year we have Downs a surefire blue chip prospect and a good group behind him that should go in that normal range. Pick 20 is too rich for anyone not named Downs, where a trade back makes a ton of sense to land a quality safety prospect. The position is one of the best that translates from the college to pro games, meaning plug and play starters.

Downs

Thiemann, Ramsey, Haulcey, Scott, McNeil-Warren
All of those are good. Bud Clark is another.

Not going to be easy to trade back this year with many players closely bunched together, maybe at 12.
That may be the case but teams have specific needs so hopefully their target they covet is there. I’d be more into trading back from 20 than 12. I think there will be a good player that fits our needs at 12 but only time will tell

The only guy I've watched so far is Downs. I like him at #12, but I don't think he's a top five player in the class like he is being mocked. No doubt he is smart, and he looks special when he's coming downhill. When he's attacking a gap, you can't convince him that he's not Arvell Reese.

The problem I have is that he gets beat in man coverage, so he can't really be that Kyle Hamilton, Brian Branch type slot player. And he doesn't take good angles in pursuit, so I don't Top 5 love him as a deep safety.

I actually like him the most as a micro LB. He'll draw endless comps to Hamilton this spring, but I think he's really a Budda Baker.

I don't want to crap on Downs too much, because I still have no doubt that he'll become an impact NFL safety. If you look at other high-end Pro Bowl safeties, like say Budda Baker, or Minkah Fitzpatrick, or Xavier McKinney, you would take those guys at #12 in a redraft. You probably wouldn't take them top five though. The only safety you probably would take that high is Hamilton.
He is a top 5 player in this class without a doubt, but like Kyle Hamilton who dropped to 14th in a better draft, he's probably going to drop bc of his position. At 12, he would be a steal. This defense needs a QB, a leader on the field, and this guy fits the bill. He can cover or drop the hammer on a rb. We haven't had anyone in his class of safety for a generation.......maybe 2.

What this team needs at 12 is an impact player on defense. My fear is that there could be run on defenders early and leave us with WRs and OTs as the BPA. In such a case, a trade back makes sense. What this draft lacks at the top , it makes up for in depth. We could plug a lot of holes in round 2 this year, particularly at LB.

The bigger return would be moving back from 12. 20 would probably get a late 3rd in return.

Hes trash why do people keep wanting here. Hes probably equally as bad as to what we have in Dallas.
While i agree that Blakenship seems to be getting overrated by some on the board, his value is his ability be Parker's extension on the field. I guess we'll see what Parker thinks about him when/if the Cowboys try to sign him in free agency.

Dude was rated the 92nd strong safety out of 98 in 2025. No thanks. If Parker preaches that hes a good teacher then we dont need Blankenship here at all. Same goes for Mr.5second forty (Nakobe Dean)

You'll get Reed Blankenship as a Free Agent.

New coordinators like to bring in some of their guys to help teach the other players.
Dallas should add 2 safeties a free agent and draft one as well, both safeties need to be replaced Wilson and Hooker need to go.

Listened to a recent Broaddus / Voch pod and it sounded like they would be ok with Thieneman at 20 depending on the board.

I am about there...dude is a stud. I really like Ramsey too.

Dillon Thieneman S Oregon

comp Jevon Holland

Overview

Savvy three-year starter with NFL size, speed and alignment versatility. Thieneman is an extension of his defensive coordinator, aligning and adjusting the secondary to motion and pre-snap shifts. He’s an instinctive, rangy safety who can roll down into big nickel or robber positioning. He has a good feel for play design and route concepts in zone but has average change of direction to match breaks in man. He’s not a big thumper near the line, but he rushes into the action with a relentless pursuit that should allow him to keep stacking high scores in the tackle columns. Thieneman checks important boxes for teams looking to add versatile playmakers in the secondary.

Strengths

  • Rare production (306 tackles, eight interceptions) in his three seasons.
  • Size/athleticism combination to play all three safety positions.
  • High coverage IQ with a strong feel for spacing and route structure.
  • Range and ball-tracking ability to play over the top.
  • Rarely takes eyes off the quarterback for extended periods of time.
  • Persistent pursuit of the football keeps him near the action.
  • Reads run and races downhill to squeeze work space for ball-carriers.
  • Recognizes run track and bolts to the junction point ready to meet the runner.

Weaknesses

  • Man coverage begins to show cracks as the route progresses.
  • Average short space change-of-direction quickness.
  • Step slow to adjust his pursuit angles to the perimeter.
  • Needs better hand usage to stack and play off blocks.
  • Full speed alley running leads to greater hit/miss variability.
  • Average stopping power when bringing down bigger bodies.

Depending on how far you move that’s about right. But if there’s 3-4 guys at 20 you like abd you moved down a few spots and still get one of them that third could get you a goid player too. I’m not opposed to trading down with either. Just have to get 2 impact players with those picks. If you can add more picks too that’s a major win. But we have to hit on 2 guys or all these moves at DT are gonna be a waste
