Watching Eric Berry was a joy to watch how he shut down Gronk. Wish him a speedy recovery. That is how the position is suppose to be played. The Cowboys in all honesty hasn't a true safety since the days of Cornell Green, Cliff Harris & Darren Woodson. Our current safeties are work in progress. Byron Jones still has room to grow but at this moment isn't what we inspected from a high draft pick. Jeff Heath well enough said. This is my opinion, one that I hope both Byron & Heath proof me wrong this year.

Yet another Heath bash with no real basis.

The main thing Heath needs to do to maintain what we lost with church is his tackling. To this point Heath has been excellent coming up to fill and tackling in space. HE is hard to run away from in coverage.

About the only bad thing I have seen from Heath is a blown coverage and I am not even sure it was on him and not Wilson.

Nonetheless people act like he was bad last year and has been bad this preseason. Not the case.

I like Byron Jones. And everything I have read from scouts and coaches likes Byron Jones. The problem for Byron is that he plays a lot of man and a lot lone deep safety. Remember, he shut down Gronk a couple of years ago as well. I'll take his man coverage as a safety against any safety in the league.

The problem is that man is not easy to get picks from as is zone is. And when your zone play is usually relegated as the single high safety, you're not going to get a lot of picks because you have so much ground to cover. Part of the issue was that Church was so limited. He can only play short matchup zone or in the box zone. So there is no switching up of responsibilities to throw the opposing offense off. And that's a big reason why when Heath gets starting time...he starts making INT's...he can play the scheme differently than Church.

The only thing that worries me about Heath is that in preseason he looked out of position at times. But believe me...we really don't want to lose Byron to injury. That would be devastating to this defense.

Eric Berry is the best safety in the league. There aren't a lot of Eric Berrys out there.

Byrone Jones will never be an Eric Berry, however, he still has the potential to be a very good player.

I'm hopeful.

FRISCO —

Strong safety Jeff Heath might as well have a target on his back rather than No. 38 emblazoned on his jersey when Dallas Cowboys take the field in Sunday's season opener against the New York Giants.

It's his first official start in place of the departed Barry Church.

And while his coaches and teammates believe in his abilities, his pedigree as a primarily a special teams player after making the team as an undrafted free agent from tiny Saginaw Valley State in 2013, some Cowboys fans are certainly leery

Your right, of course...Byron Jones (FS) is not Eric Berry (SS). But then again, they also play two completely different position with 2 completely different sets of responsibilities. From what I've seen, Byron is doing exactly what he is asked to do, which also means much of what he does great goes underappreciated.

hey you left out Charlie Waters :)

One could argue that Safety is the hardest position to fill in the NFL. You have to Run like a CB and hit like a LB. Ed Reed was the best I've seen.

Heath apologists are so sensitive.

He is below mediocre. All your wishes and hopes won't change that.

Funny how things ebb and flow in the NFL. It was not that long ago that the safety position wasn't that hard to fill and it was rare to see a high draft pick spent on a Safety.

Byron Jones receives more unfair criticism than any defensive player I can recall. Everything from coaches opinions to scouts to advanced metrics show he is a very good player and a GREAT man coverage safety, yet people speak of him like he's unfit to start on their local varsity team.

Only one safety in football last year had a better catch % against in man situations than Jones. He's good, he just isn't a ball hawk.

Trade Jones to KC for a first round pick.

;)

From where I sat, Heath made more plays on the ball than anybody else playing safety for us last year. Give me more of that.
