Safety Prospects?

With Mark Barron being hurt at the combine, what is available for safety and what round do you take one in?

Do you take a guy like Iloka if available in the third? Or do you wait until later and take a guy like Robinson or Smith in the 4-6 round range?

Smith had a nice combine. Prime and Mayock gave him a high grade.

Harrison Smith seems like the type of "cerebral" player this D needs........not to mention that he is more than athletic enough to play the position as well. I could see him at SS and Sensy at FS. Just let Sensy run around and not have to think so much - doesn't seem like a dummy BUT he seems to need simplicity.

By the way, there is NO WAY Harrison Smith makes it past Round 3.

I'd rather convert Bruce Irvin or Zach Brown honestly. This safety class is really bad.

 HUH? Convert a 6'3", 245 lb. 3-4 OLB that ran a 4.43 40 at that weight OR a 6'1", 244 lb. WLB that ran a 4.43 40 to S is about as silly as it gets. You do realize that Irvin is only 1 lb. lighter than the GREAT Von Miller checked in at last year and Brown is almost Ray Lewis' size.

In the immortal words of Rick James - "Cocaine is a hell of a drug".

Now you see how bad the class is? Or is that over your head too?

Man, safety is usually a position where I have a pet cat, a favourite player. Recent ones have been Tyler Sash, TJ Ward, OJ Atogwe (ok, that's a while back)...Point being, I love safeties.

But these guys all suck. I don't like anyone right now.

Iloka is the only one I like and I would be mad if we passed on him. He isn't great in zone whcih is what our FS plays. He plays very very deep before the snap. He excels in man coverwhere he played the nickel and last two games at #2 CB in college. He can cover any TE in man cover which is what teams like. Iloka would be more of a SS for Dallas than a FS.
Not a bad thing, I like him, the only safety I like, but I wouldn't take him before the 3rd.

Ok, when Barron, Smith, or Iloka are all starting in the next year or 2 and we still have our revolving door back there because NON-SCOUTS or NFL people say the class sucks, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEEEEEEASE don't be one of those people clamoring about "we should've got (insert name) in 2012". Barron & Smith would be a starter by Week 5 on this team. They don't all have to be Hall of Famers - just good, solid players. I think I'll trust ex-players on this one.

I've been pulling to draft a safety for the last few years. I was on the weddle train when he came out, I wanted Chung, I was dying to get Earl Thomas. I've been wanting a safety for a long time. I just don't see one in this class worth drafting.

The one that i really like is Markelle Martin, of Oklahoma St.
The only problem is that he plays strong safety, and we need a centerfielder kind of safety.

All I can say is I hope you're right. Because, every time I watched Notre Dame play, Smith was the ONLY factor on that D. Just seems like a very cerebral player that made plays and is NOT limited by his athleticsm (like Church). Would make a good SS and be worthy of a 3rd Round pick. What is gonna really piss me off is if the Steelers, Ravens, Jets, or any other upper ecehlon D drafts him. They have good D's because they usually know what the hell they're doing in the draft.

I think this team has so many holes that they need to just resign Elam and try to draft other places.

Agreed. I'd trade back to #17 for Cincy's 3rd. Target Iloka and CB Norman or OLB McClellan.

Antonio Allen from S Carolina intrigues me and could be had middle rounds.

Iloka is definitely a big prospect. He has great size, and pretty good speed for a safety. he is about a late 2nd, early 3rd prospect.

Harrison Smith from ND is moving up the boards and could go mid 2nd to early 3rd.

Barron is a big question mark. If he doesn't run in the pro-day than you literally have no measurables to go off of, which is scary. So barring a quick recovery before his pro day I can't see him going in the first without showing anything more then game film, so he'll be a 2nd round prospect as well

Norman's 4.66 40 time scared me off. I'm not thrilled about adding him.

Today they said "Antonio is more of an in the box type of safety."

You're being a bit overly dramatic, I take it but there certainly are no stars in this class. Barron isn't as bad as many make him out to be though.

Yeah I was lol. But I can't really say that at any point in this draft there won't be a player I would rather have.

Not impressed with any of these prospects, honestly. I'd hold off this year and use that pick on another position. Too many Mike Hamlin, Pat Watkins, DeAngelo Smith bad memories with these mid round safeties

I don't draft one at all this year, to be quite honest.

I would wait until there's a truly elite safety in the draft, and either sell the farm for him, or hope he falls to my pick.
