Salary Cap Status

If the Cowboys want to spend money on one of the QBs to backup Dak then I see the wisdom in that.

Short of someone like Ingram having his franchise tag rescinded I don't see anything else worth spending space on. This was a really bad VFA class overall.

Including Romo's 14m the Cowboys are now 19m+ under the cap........

that is without touching Dez, Witten or TCrawford(another 18m in space)......imagine being 37m under the cap on June 2nd

the signing of draft picks will use 1.8m in space......

ZMartin is signed for 2018 at 9.3m and an extension will only create even more space.......

They should roll over at least 10m to next year and will start the offseason 25m+ under the cap even with Romo's 8.9m cap hit

With a young roster, 10 more draft picks and only a handful of departing FAs next year, we could see a War Daddy or Brother or even a Cousin or Uncle
Maybe a War Illegitimate Son

Put me in the category where the highest paid players on your team upwards of 10mill should be QB, And a mixture 2 on each side of the Oline and dline... those are premium positions that always are tough to find and replace

I love dez and witten( and zeke as well down the road) but those positions should get churned out with draft picks replacing production on the cheap ala the patriots
You're about 10 to 15 yrs behind the curve. If Dak's play this season is close to last yr he is looking at averaging close to 25 mil a yr. All-pros and pro bowlers are gonna get paid. We got off easy with Tyron's contract IMO.

Dallas (Jones) are more emboldened than I was anticipating. Stephen didn't blink when he lost a big chunk of his secondary. Dallas clearly is getting out of the business of big contracts at positions they feel they can fill in draft (CB, S, DL, LB, RB). Looks to me like they will pay big for premium QB, OL, WR1 & DE1 and thats about it.

If it were now I'd agree. When dak signs in 3 years it'll probably be 30mil a year.

JJ will throw an offer at Dak following the 2018 season. No one wants to be in the self made purgatory that Washington has placed itself in. And if he is given a respectable offer I think he will take it without playing hardball. I don't see Dak going from a 4th rounder to the highest paid player in the league unless he win a ring.

Yes. There will be CAP money. Thanks to Jerry and the TV contracts.

How Stephen goes about spending it - which I hope carefully - is the great question they will answer in the next few years.

I do not think they can do that - there are rules within the CBA which spells out what they can be paid.
DAK will also be RFA.

This could play out similar to what is going on in Washington.
But with better results on our side.

Stephen has said on multiple occasions that the new Cowboys strategy is to pay their FA's who deserve second
and third contracts. The will not be paying inflated salaries to FA from other teams but, using the cap to fill holes
with mid-level and bargain FAs. Their focus is to keep drafting good players and let FA's walk they don't want to
keep so that they max out comp picks. The strategy is clear for all to see. Hopefully, no more Mr. Hardy pickups
that costs bundles of money but, no production.

having all this cap space is fantastic but not being able to win in the playoffs does little to get excited about it

Post 2018 is the earliest they can extend either Dak or Zeke. Per the CBA, renegotiations can not begin until after the player's third season.

Like you said, Dak will only be an RFA, so might be able to get a team friendly deal (compared to open market UFA) by "buying out" his final year (~800k) with an extension after his third season. He gets the safety of a bigger contract and the team gets a friendlier deal. Win-Win scenario.

We are already a contender, people need to stop with this 2018 will be the year crap. We are there now. So what the d is not to what everyone wants it to be. Who says it won't be playing like a top 10 come playoff time. Well, who says, way too many that is who. Anyhow, they may finish 12 to 15 in stats, as long as they play top 10 at the end of the year and in the playoffs.

It remains to be seen, but that is my prediction. 2018, yes it will be better, but I am not willing to say we are a year away. We are here for 2017 too. With this offense and a defense that will not be any worse, it can only be better, even if a little bit. And that could have bee good enough.

Dak will not be a RFA in 2019.... he is under contract for 4 years and will be a UFA in 2020

You are right that the earliest he could be extended is the Spring of 2019

I think he takes more guaranteed money and less APY..... something like 4/60m with 100% gtd

Teams today do not extend RB's no matter how good they are. You play Zeke for all it's worth and take the 5th year option. After year 5 you go get another hotshot RB in the draft and keep on trucking.

I think you're $40M too light with that number of years. No franchise QB is signing for $15M annual salary. By the time Dak is eligible, $25M will be the rate.
