Per Profootballtalk:

On the surface, the salary cap seems to be an objective, unambiguous formula. In reality, the specific team-by-team spending limit is finalized via back-and-forth negotiations between the NFL and the NFL Players Association.

For 2017, the final number will be announced soon, since each team must be in compliance with it by March 9. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the cap currently is expected to be in the range of $166 million to $169 million.

Last year, the cap was $155.27 million. In 2015, the cap was $143.28 million. The year before, $133 million. In 2013, it was $123 million.

Prior to that, the cap was going up much more slowly; in 2012, the cap was $120.6 million per team.

The end result, assuming the low end of the currently projected range for 2017, is a total increase of 37.6 percent in only five years. Which means a lot more money for teams to spend — and a lot more money for players to make.

Alexander good evening Sir. I don't know that's why I'm going to ask. Do FA want to be in Dallas or would they avoid Dallas in your honest opinion?
Dallas is not a destination for free agents.

We are not showing the leg.

Tell the others.

Plz. With Jerry's penchant for paying/keeping guys he likes, along with being on the "Cowboys", Dallas is always a hot destination.

A lot of pro players grew up being Dallas fans.

The young QB that errybody loves in Dak and the rambunctious All-Pro Zeke I think a lot of guys would like to come here. Defensively, players know who Marinelli is. Throw in the brand new, start of the art facility and that's just icing on the cake.

That being said, money talks.

Exactly...more money equals more talent buying power.

The Cowboys play in a tax free state, have the best facilities (stadium and practice) in the NFL and are an ascending young team.

If/When the Cowboys are looking to pay a player the Cowboys will be at the tippy top of consideration. It's a good place to be.

And people also only think of Dallas as a destination when considering big name FA. It's an advantage up and down the market.

Good time to be a Cowboys fan.

Winning talks too. We were 13-3 with a young roster. We are a couple difference makers on defense from being SB favorites. We get a plus corner and a plus edge rusher and we are going to be an absolute force. As it is we are going to be considered contenders.

A few years ago Avril and Bennett took less money to play for a contender in Seattle and galvanized that defense. Our situation is not that far off from what theirs was.

If McClay likes you and you're willing to come for less money...come on down. If you're looking to break the bank
pass us by. If you think you are a big payday player...Cleveland or Jacksonville is your team.

Exactly. Winning does matter as well

We have done that twice in the past three years. There needs to be consistency first.

For the most part, these are players with short shelf lives as professionals.

Most of the time when a free agent is asked where he wants to go, the sometimes truthful "I want to go to a team where I can win a Super Bowl" comes out. There is a reason veterans flock to New England. They want to play for the best head coach and win a Super Bowl. That is exactly why Chris Long stood up Garrett last year. The Patriots are what we were, they are even threatening to challenge the winning allure of Landry's regime in the 1970s-80s.

Until the Cowboys' "brand" means winning and not the best marketed, players will not put them at the top of their list. The list is driven first by money, then they can indulge themselves with other things. Winning is number two and a strong one if the player is worth their own salt.

We are a couple difference makers on defense from being SB favorites. We get a plus corner and a plus edge rusher and we are going to be an absolute force. As it is we are going to be considered contenders.

Very soon, if things do not change, most of these players who wouldn't have even been born the last time the Cowboys appeared in a Super Bowl will hit their second contract. That is pretty sad.

A few years ago Avril and Bennett took less money to play for a contender in Seattle and galvanized that defense. Our situation is not that far off from what theirs was.

They played a short game. Our situation could be like Seattle's but the money needs to be there. It is not like the Seahawks had a cap crunch when they signed the pair of them. The way we court free agents now is like being invited to a private dinner in an empty restaurant. The ambiance matters. It is just not exciting being told that once we finagle this or that, then we can pay you.

2018 will be telling. Mainly because we will have the opportunity to play the game without one hand tied behind our backs.

All things being equal I don't know how you could possibly think otherwise other than just to disagree which you like to do alot.
The "now" part is what I meant to convey.

Not now. In a few years. We cannot even compete at the moment. No matter what the bean counters insist.

Wait, what? McClay drives the free agent train?

How dare you discount the effect of the facilities!

Wait, what? McClay drives the free agent train?

I should have said that Garrett and the Coordinators put in their wishlist... McClay evaluates the field and picks the best
available and Stephen qualifies the maximum price that will be offered. I guess you could say that McClay drives the bus
on new players willing to come play in Dallas for the hometown discount.

It's funny you think players care about a team needing to restructure a deal to pay them. Players probably understand the cap a lot less than people on this forum do. Agents definitely understand the cap a lot more than a lot of people on this forum do. If an agent tells a player Dallas is in play the player isn't responding... "Are the Cowboys willing to restructure Dez?!?"

I don't know why you'd ignore it. It certainly isn't the most important factor but it'd play a role.

I'm sure you think silicon Valley companies build corporate play lands for the fun of it...or maybe you didn't even know they did?

Seattle in 2012 had signed Matt Flynn to a massive contract and released him the next year after RW emerged. They were in a cap crunch in 2013 because of it.

They also had gone 11-5 in 2012 after being mired in sub-.500 mediocrity for 4 years following the Hasselbeck/Alexander heyday. They had no consistency.

Between Lynch and their OL the situations are remarkably similar.

The free agency period was strange. Elvis Dumervil got signed to a lucrative contract and other FA like Mike Johnson and Anthony Spencer were franchised. The market dried up for top dollar and Avril and Bennett took less on short deals.
