Sam Cooke Had One Of the Purest Voices Ever

A Change Is Gonna Come was one of the first fifteen songs I added to my IPhone music library. Now I must stop and search for it after adding 650 more songs since. :D I consider it one of the best all-time songs of any genre.

I think there is some good Soul music around. You just have to look for it because it isn't widely played or considered popular today.

I agree. If you're listening to Top 40 stations, then chances are you won't heart that good "soul" music.

I listen to adult contemporary stations when I need some filling music, but I also listen to satellite radio. Satellite radio has some good stations that offers some good music.

That is all. I've been listening to his greatest hits and man he could just sing his face off.
Sam Cooke is one of my favorites. when he sings it seems like it is effortless for him and the articulation or pronunciation of words is so distinct and exacting yet his voice is smooth at the same time - that really sets him apart from other singers in my opinion. My favorite song by him is "That's were its at".

oops, misspelled the song title- supposed to be thats where its at, dont know why, but i cant edit my post.

Love some Sam Cooke but also a huge fan of Sam Moore, esp this gem he did with Mr. Twitty.

I did enjoy this. I also like the Alabama Shakes stuff. She reminds me a little of Janis Joplin with the way she powers into vocals.

amazing singer one of my favorites.

She went to high school with Jimmy Johnson. He used to call her Beat Weeds. No one has ever sang with more motion than she did.

I am really glad you found Sam Cooke Hos. I have been a fan of his since I was a boy. I got it from my Uncle who loved R&B.

Years ago, in the old days, you could catch shows with several stars playing gigs, like you would find at the Apollo Theater etc. They would cut tracks for you and sell them right at the door. Anyway, my Uncle was big fan and he passed that on but I'm not sure that it took with a lot of the younger kids. I love Sam Cooke.

Sam Cooke has the greatest voice of all-time IMO. I can't play 'A Change is Gonna Come' without tearing up. Seriously, one of the most powerful songs ever when you consider the time he made it but it can have meaning to anyone who is going thru difficult times. You guys are right, they don't have singers like him anymore. Then again, how do gain that soul when you are tweeting on the phone/computer all day. Gosh my generation sucks.

One of my very favorite tunes is Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions rendition of People Get Ready. I could listen to that song over and over and over again.

Some songs just speak to you. For me, that's one of those songs.

You should check out Otis Redding's cover of "Change Gonna Come", Hostile. He's not as smooth as Sam, but he's SO damn soulful. I listen to a lot of old soul music while I sit here at work, so I have a rather large collection of both Sam and Otis. :)

I didn't just find him. I've listened to him for many years, but I was listening to his greatest hits CD and just wanted to post this thread.

what a great song that is.

and hos, i was def speaking about a change gonna come...

Hos, now you're hittin me where I live. Don't talk about Soul music. I will engage you all day my brotha. ;)

And yes if Change Is Gonna Come doesn't elicit goosebumps then you may as well call the morgue. And I don't care if you listen to his music or Soul in general. That is one of the top 10 songs of all time.

Mostly, I just miss when people could really sing and it didn't matter what they looked like or how well they danced.

Sam Cooke could really sing and I wish more people knew how great he was at it.

That brings up a thought.

Could Roy Orbison make it today?

Not to mention Aretha Franklin or Ella Fitzgerald.
