Sam Cooke Had One Of the Purest Voices Ever

That brings up a thought.

Could Roy Orbison make it today?

Not to mention Aretha Franklin or Ella Fitzgerald.
Man I hope so. I wonder if George Strait could since he just stands there and sings. Look at his career and it is amazing, but if he were breaking in right now, I have my doubts he'd sing anywhere but the bar scene.

My grandmother loved Nat King Cole. I remember her putting on those really old songs. Beautiful voice. I can't recall ever hearing Sam Cooke but will check him out.

Oh I'm sure you probably have heard Sam on numerous occasions.

Watch/listen to "Animal House" and you'll hear a couple Sam Cooke songs.

After the advent of MTV it was much easier to know which group sang what, I mean it was posted right there on the screen.

But for everything before that... If it weren't for satellite radio I wouldn't be familiar with half the groups that I am.

I also remember my grandmother being a big Ray Charles fan. I will check out Mr. Cooke.

Oh, I don't know about that. Country music is one genre where one might still get away with that. It is about the only one where melody is still emphasized.

Actually, music is returning to ancient styles. Vaudeville singers, like Al Jolson, moved and danced while singing all the time. Then recording technology cmae along. After Bing Crosby mastered microphone techniques, singers were tied down to their bulky microphones for decades. It is only (relatively) recently that light-weight mikes and battery packs have completely liberated singers from their spots.

By the way, Jolson would have been a star in any age. He was a showman and would have made a great rock frontman.

Please don't take offense to this. I hated that. He has a great voice. I don't think I have ever heard him before. At least not that I know of. But the over 2 minute intro and the jazzing up of the song rubbed me the wrong way. He took what to me is one of the most powerful songs ever, and he added cheese to it. I appreciate you sharing it with me though. Honestly, much appreciation.

Ha ha! None taken but if you long for that type of music I'm sorry to say that's about as close as it gets these days.

He does have a great voice. I will look for more of his stuff. I am just so in love with that song and the way Sam Cooke sings it that I am spoiled.
