I've seen a lot of posts since TC started about Sam Williams. Most are usually "it's time to let him go" or "Jerry won't admit his mistake" or something along one of those two lines. The purpose of this thread is to remind his critics; Williams was a FA after last year. The Cowboys signed him to a one-year, $2.5 million contract. The deal includes a $600,000 signing bonus and $2 million in guaranteed money, with an average annual value of $2.5 million.

For the 2026 season, Williams will receive a $1.4 million base salary plus his $600,000 signing bonus. His contract carries a $2.5 million salary-cap hit and a $2 million dead-cap charge. Overall, it's a relatively modest one-year commitment for the Cowboys, with $2 million of the deal guaranteed. More importantly, his contract is less than one percent of this year's salary cap. Less than .01% That is peanuts!

I have no clue if he will impress Schotty/CP enough to make the 53 or not. If he does, then the Cowboys get a player dirt cheap. If he doesn't then there was someone else they liked better. But either way the investment in Williams isn't enough for all the handwringing over him.

Why cut him? He makes next to nothing, has experience at a position we are young at, and is playing for the bag.

Only thing is he is a genuinely stupid player, and if EZ is gonna fly off the handle, not sure we can have two like that.

Edge rushers are like pitchers in baseball. There’s not much to gain by cutting Sam Williams.

I’m happy with him. He shows flashes every once in a while and if he gets to be a massive headache we can cut him. If he gives us 3-6 sacks or a fumble recovery or two then that’s a good deal for less than 1% of the cap. If you’re expecting a full time playmaker then you’ll be disappointed.

He isn’t good enough to play end but I’m excited to see how he does as an OLB

Usually when they give you guaranteed money they plan on you being on the 53. But Sam didn't do much in the preseason game. Similar to Hooker to a degree who got $3.5 million guaranteed. He hasn't had that great of a camp but they didn't play him in the game so he should be safe.

Sam Williams is cheap and can play special teams. There's really no reason to cut him.

The OLB/edge room will likely be six deep with EZE, Gary, Miller, Lawrence, Houston, and Sam Williams.

Can't really use preseason game production as a measuring stick. Sam Williams appeared on 16 snaps Saturday night. It's not like he was out there the entire game and did nothing.

Not saying he is great or anything like that, just saying the Cowboys saw enough from him his first four years to want to give him another shot.

Well when mad Max gets here someone has to go lol jk

Gave up on him 2 years ago. Hes been another very common 2nd round bust for dallas. I cant really blame them for taking one more cheapish try with him though if they feel something might be there.

Same people with faith in him still were bashing nashon Wright regularly. Lulz they know who they are

Here is the deal with Sam Williams. If you look at him standing next to his Dline, Edge and LB teammates, Sam is actually pretty big in size. For being 6'4", 260 lbs, he looks slightly bigger. Yet, he is extremely gifted physically. I'm willing to bet he is our fastest player off the snap of the football. Why would you want to let him go?

It is best the Cowboys keep Sam Williams since he is signed for cheap on a 1 year deal, he has size, speed and can play aggressively. If this new defensive group of coaches can get the best out of Sam, he will be a cheap player worth keeping for the amount of talent and ability he brings to the Cowboys. Sam Williams is a keeper this year in my book. Find someone else to gripe about. I'm keeping this beast.

How often have we seen the Cowboys cut a player with guaranteed money, though? It may not seem like much, but there is still a cost that the Joneses have to pay to not have him on the roster.

Frankly, if they decide to move on, I could see them trying to trade him even for a conditional pick so that another team takes on the guaranteed salary cost. Then the team is only stuck with the signing bonus ($600,000).

Of course, his cap hit is $2.5 million while his dead cap hit is $2 million, so they might be satisfied just saving that half-million.

Good news is that we have eleven days till cutdown.

Let’s see who makes the plays to make the team.
