Sam Williams Contract

Why cut him? He makes next to nothing, has experience at a position we are young at, and is playing for the bag.

Only thing is he is a genuinely stupid player, and if EZ is gonna fly off the handle, not sure we can have two like that.

Edge rushers are like pitchers in baseball. There’s not much to gain by cutting Sam Williams.
U cut him to make room for another player. EZ, miller, Lawrence, Gary, Houston….all OLB I would take above Williams, can even use Barham as a rusher at times. If they find we need another Olineman, got to cut someone from somewhere.

How often have we seen the Cowboys cut a player with guaranteed money, though? It may not seem like much, but there is still a cost that the Joneses have to pay to not have him on the roster.

Frankly, if they decide to move on, I could see them trying to trade him even for a conditional pick so that another team takes on the guaranteed salary cost. Then the team is only stuck with the signing bonus ($600,000).

Of course, his cap hit is $2.5 million while his dead cap hit is $2 million, so they might be satisfied just saving that half-million.
Strawman argument, the Cowboys currently have over $42 million in dead money.

I've seen a lot of posts since TC started about Sam Williams. Most are usually "it's time to let him go" or "Jerry won't admit his mistake" or something along one of those two lines. The purpose of this thread is to remind his critics; Williams was a FA after last year. The Cowboys signed him to a one-year, $2.5 million contract. The deal includes a $600,000 signing bonus and $2 million in guaranteed money, with an average annual value of $2.5 million.

For the 2026 season, Williams will receive a $1.4 million base salary plus his $600,000 signing bonus. His contract carries a $2.5 million salary-cap hit and a $2 million dead-cap charge. Overall, it's a relatively modest one-year commitment for the Cowboys, with $2 million of the deal guaranteed. More importantly, his contract is less than one percent of this year's salary cap. Less than .01% That is peanuts!

I have no clue if he will impress Schotty/CP enough to make the 53 or not. If he does, then the Cowboys get a player dirt cheap. If he doesn't then there was someone else they liked better. But either way the investment in Williams isn't enough for all the handwringing over him.
Uh oh......does anyone else smell a 15-sack season?

The 2027 franchise tag recipient......and contract headache.

And? Name a player that Dallas has cut who had a fully guaranteed contract.

I'm all for letting Sam Williams go. I just don't know if that is something the Joneses do with fully guaranteed players. I can't think of one they've cut. Now, they did trade Parsons last year and his fifth-year deal was fully guaranteed, but that is different than cutting him.

Do you realize how little amount of money you are talking about?
I do. I just need to see evidence that the Joneses have let go of players with fully guaranteed contracts. No one has provided that yet.

It isn't a question of how much the contract is. It's a question of precedent. If the Joneses haven't done it in the past, then how likely are they to start doing it now?

I am rooting for him. I hope he succeeds this year. But He played some in the preseason game and I didn't see much. The fact he was playing may say something.

I remember his rookie year when he showed some promise. The problem was the bonehead plays that came with that promise. Last year he seemed to cut that stupid mistakes some but he did not look like the same high potential players he was as a rookie. A year behind him after a bad knee injury should have him healthy and ready this year. But he has to show something and the Cowboys need solid play at the Edges.

There you go lol

I actually agree that I wouldn't cut Williams. But it's not like there aren't reasons to.

I’m a little concerned about him playing for sack numbers. He is a roughing the QB call on 3rd and 22 waiting to happen.

Having him rush the punter would be a mistake.
