Sam Young

Plankton's right....this guy SUCKS. There's a reason he went in the 6th round. Almost got Jimmy the Emu lookin' Clausen killed multiple times. Awful big thread for a kid that hasn't done a THING

Do you not realize that it is incredibility hard to even be a 6th round pick? A guy can't be an absolute bust and make into the NFL. He obviously has to have some ability to be drafted and the Cowboys do have hope that he can develop into a starting RT at some point in his career. And for the "he hasn't done a thing" quote, Young was a 4 year starter at a major college football program. That alone is a major accomplishment in itself.

If this guy never plays a down for the Cowboys , he is still a better tackle than 99% of the people that people that puts him down . Starting for Notre Dame for 4 years is something to be proud of . It is easy to sit back and put certain players down . The truth is , that this young man has talent. Is he good enough to make the team ? We will know in a couple of months . If this guy is that bad, then we need to be worried about the Cowboy`s scouting and drafting evaluations.

umm, seeing that this is a FAN board rather than a board where offensive tackles post your point is ... well, not so good.

As a fan , I think the Cowboys should know what they have with Sam Young. He has some talent . Is it enough ? We will know shortly. My point is that I respect the talent this guy has to get to the place he is now . He is big, strong and has slow feet. The big and the strong may not be enough to overcome the feet. Before I say ths guy stinks , I would like to wait until training camp. Yes , the only position I ever played ( in my youth) was offensive tackle.

No one has said that he shouldn't be proud of starting for four years at ND. No one has said that they are a better candidate to play OL for the Cowboys than him. I haven't put the guy down. All I have stated is that I don't believe that he has the positional flexibility and quick enough feet to warrant a roster spot on my favorite team.

No emotion, no animus, just my opinion from watching every game the guy played for four years.

Slow feet is bad news for any RT and the QB he is trying to protect. 4 years of watching Sam Young and I will be amazed if he is ever anything more then a marginal backup.

Yeah lets just cut the guy now. In fact lets just go ahead and cut anyone picked after the 3rd round, they all suck otherwise they would be picked earlier. None of them have a snowballs chance in hell of ever turning into anything.

Nate Newton was a UDFA. Same with Mark Tuinei. Same with Drew Pearson (and that was when the draft was 12 or 13 rounds). Terrell Davis was a 6th round draft pick. Jay Ratliff was a 6th or 7th round pick (forget which). I think you get my drift. There are literally hundreds of lower round draft picks who have gone on to have stellar NFL careers.

most of those guys came from obscure programs, switched positions, had other concerns. Young has been watched for his entire career. If anyone thought he was really worth more he would have gone higher; especially at a tackle position.

Ratliff played at Auburn. Not exactly Sonoma State. Didn't Terrell Davis play at Georgia? A guy named Tom Brady played at Michigan. There are many additiional players like them that have had great success in the NFL. At any rate, I'm certainly not saying Young will be a good player. I'm just saying we don't know. Odds are he won't pan out, but it's not a certainty. That's my point.

Wasn't Young the top rated tackle recruit coming out of high school? There's got to be a reason for that.

The thing is, do we keep 5 tackles? Free, Colombo, Barron, Brewster, and Young?

Deciding who is top rated out of high school is a crapshoot. Obviously he was a good prospect coming out of high school, but there is no real way to compare players. The opponents, the districts, the states, the guys they line up against and with are just to wildly diverse across the country that a quality comparison can't be made. Particularly with O-linemen a lot of the criteria is simply whether they have the requisite size to play the position at the college level. Even if he is something of a lesser athlete, a kid who is 6'5", 300 lbs coming out of high school will be a higher rated O-line prosepct than one who is 6'2", 240 lbs simply because the smaller guy is less likely to ever have the requisite size.
