Same Old Defense

A few individual highlights, but where are the stops when you really need them... or the takeaways?

Deja vu all over again.

Clowns like Heath, the other horrid safeties and Brown will make the mistakes and get burnt. Funny to listen to fans talk about Brown being so great. The guy is horrid. When 3/5 of your secondary are backup material, you don't have a good secondary.

In years past when Lee is out the team gives up 40 points. So OP is wrong. Not the ‘same old defense’.

You guys have no clue what you are talking about. Did you see that receiver group on the Lions? look at some of the catches they made today with very tight coverage. Stafford was on today!!!. Defense did their part this thread is ridiculous.

Lewis, Heath and Brown made bad mistakes which have the Lions most of their points. Jones was locking down there right side, not sure why the left side couldn't stop anybody. Awuzie had good coverage but was getting targeted.
Chido was getting abused all game, the Lions exposed this defense today even though we were warned earlier. The defense looked good because they played crappy offenses, and on the flipside this offense won't be able to play like this against a good defense.

Defense is good by 2018 standards. But they are also prone to getting put on their heels at any given moment. Some of that is youth and some of that is glaringly bad safety play and inconsistent corner play.

I don’t critize wins, and the Lions receivers made some spectacular catches.

But...

The defense doesn’t make enough plays. Going forward, I don’t see playoffs.

We look pretty .500.

That said, wait until after Thanksgiving. Teams turn things around--for better or worse--all the time over the course of a season.

The number on the left is where the QB ranks in passer rating over the last three seasons (min 1000 att).
The number on the right is that QB's passer rating against the Cowboys in the 2018 game.

6th Stafford 131.5
7th Wilson 109.8
15th Manning 98.6
18th Newton 82.4

These QB with at least 1000 attempts over the last three seasons are left on the schedule:
2nd Brees
3rd Ryan
4th Smith
14th Wentz
15th Manning
17th Bortles

Well, that’s a Det game for you though. It was just going to be that kind of day for both clubs, where big offensive plays were on the menu, and whoever had the ball last was getting the win.

The lions offense is good thats all I’ll say we got stops when we needed them to keep us in the game

The defense doesn't make enough plays?

That's rich.

Cowboys better get that pass rush in a click sooner to help the coverage.

Awuzie struggled again. There’s a reason BJones’s man is getting very few targets, and everyone is targeting Awuzie. Right now, other teams are throwing the pass even when Awuzie has blanket coverage...why? Because he can’t find the football. Today, he was looking for the ball several times, but he can’t find it. These aren’t back shoulder throws. QBs are just throwing it to their receivers as if there is no defender, and the ball is just sneaking by our CB. Once he finds the ball and makes an INT or two, this practice will change. His coverage is almost too tight, if that’s possible....he’s so into the receiver and gluing to him that he doesn’t look for and find the ball. He will get better.

I also think Tate’s TD was his responsibility. Looks like they showed man but he was to have the deep third. He started moving to the inside receiver, allowing Tate into the deep third with no deep help.

Nothing is etched in stone. Things can change.

Yep. There are Superbowl champs that have been 5-5 heading into the last third of the season.

I do wish we were playing in a way that we didn't need multiple unlikely plays in the passing game to beat a team like DET, but hey, a win is a win. I'll take 'em where I can get 'em.

I haven’t seen playoffs in our future since the Carolina game.

I don’t fault the defensive back when he gives up a phenomenal throw and catch. Poor Chido fell victim to great throws and catches several times today. But, great plays by the offense are no excuse for you not to make great plays of your own. You can just throw up your hands and say “Well, these throws are on a rope. What can I do?”

Arguably that was also the best o-line we’ve played this year...and we were getting to Stafford.
