PATS SLAP SAMUEL

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the New England Patriots have applied the franchise tag to cornerback Asante Samuel.

Samuel has emerged as a quality cornerback, and would have likely drawn plenty of attention in a light free-agent market. Historically, even so-so corners get overpaid in the early days of the league's annual shopping spree; Samuel surely would have cashed in this year.

The use of the tag also sets the stage for another ugly mess between the Pats and one of the team's key players. Last year, the agent for Deion Branch antagonized the front office by grandstanding in the media, and Samuel's agent already has begun that same process this year.

If Samuel accepts the tender, he'll receive a one-year guaranteed salary of $7.79 million.

Not surprising, given the current cap situations.

The Patriots have plenty of cap space and there would have been a bidding war for Samuel.

They now can tag him and try to negotaiate a long-term deal on better terms.

I certainly didn't think they would slap him with the tag. It doesn't make much sense economically, really.

He wanted top dollar and I don't think Jerry was ready to shell out more money into that secondary.
Newman is up next for a payday.
Besides, corners were not the problem here,Duane's scheme was.
He is now gone(Thank God) and our D WILL be better.

I don't think anyone actually believed we were going to get all or even most of those guys. However, most people should agree that it would be nice if we did get at least one of them to fill a need on the team.

The franchise tag does suck for the player because although he will be making $7 million for one season he could get around $15 million from another team in signing bonus with a base salary of about $4 million per yer. Samuel could have easily commanded a deal in the neighborhood of 6 year $47 million with a signing bonus of $15 million.

So I would be upset to!

I would agree with you if you said that no "reasonable" people on the board believed that. But there are many others...

Well Chicago has tagged Briggs...Cincy has tagged Justin Smith...NE has tagged Samuel...and Indy will tag Freeny. None of these guys were on the Cowboys Radar.

THe only players the Cowboys will really be targeting will be guards Stienbach and Deilman. Maybe free safety.
