They were drafting in 2004 top 3 for a reason!

They played a last place schedule! They are going down hard........

Lets break out their 4 losses -

Jets 10-6
Falcons 11-5
Broncos 10-6
Colts 12-4

Including Jets choke in playoffs they were 2-5 against teams with winning record.

Lets look at who they beat:

Texans 7-9
Titans 5-11
Jags 9-7
Panthers 7-9
Raiders 5-11
Saints 8-8
Raiders 5-11
Chiefs 7-9
Chiefs 7-9
Bronco's 10-6
Bucs 5-11
Browns 4-12

Thats a pathetic schedule! They were #3 in points scored against these chumps. Their defense is very good against the run - don't be fooled with 3-4. They were bottom 10 in Yards per Pass play. We can vertical this defense. Price, Glenn and Witten to get down field!

Brees was 28-9 TD/Int - he's not doing that again.
Teams have a year to figure them out. No more suprise.

Parcells versus Schott?

This is going to be a victory for the Cowboys. 34-17 final!

It should also be noted that they have a pass rush thats actually worse than what we had last year.

In many ways San Diego were the version of the Dallas Cowboys 2003. They has alot luck and played beyond expectation. Still, its going to be a difficult game to win.

Nors...now this is a good post! Seriously.....

That is great information that I was not aware of. I'm feeling good about going into SD, but this makes me feel even better. Things change year to year, and they really do have a good/solid team, but I did not realize they had such a soft schedule by last years standings anyways.

the reason i think we win.. no GATES. he was their passing game, plain and simple. without him we can stack 8 in the box and hold LT to under 100. and i got a feeling our offense is going to put up some points on their d. i could actually see this game getting out of hand in our favor, call me nuts.

And they really didn't shut down many GOOD running backs. Looking at their games, the good HBs who they limited only had like 10 or so carries.

I think the loss of Gates for the opener will be felt more than they are willing to admit. Our weakness in the pre-season was the middle of the field, and who better than Gates to take advantage of that? Without him, they are average. 8 in the box against LT, and let the chips fall. My bet is with the Boys.

I think Dallas can stop the run or atleast contain it, I worry about Drew Brees who finished third in the NFL last year, with a 104.8 quarterback rating.

OK, I'll go on record. I think we lose this game. There is a whole lot of kool aid being consumed around here. Our OL has played together against first line defenses for how long? There are going to be warts. SD will stack the line and blitz every down. They will run blitz and bring the house occasionally on passing downs. Our offense did not respond well to pressure, all pre-season. Our red zone performance is suspect until we prove otherwise. Our kick off and punt coverage teams have looked vulnerable.

Brees used Gates a lot in the RZ last year but LT is the real deal. There are going to be warts. We have a lot of rookies on defense. Mistakes will be made. Pre-season has shown us to be vulnerable up the middle against passes with our LB's sometimes making poor transitions from run to pass (an experience problem). We have shown vulnerability to cut backs when we over pursued (an experience problem). Brees was close to mistake free last year and why do we expect him to all of a sudden fall apart?

I think we will give them a tough game but ultimately they will eke out a win. I hope I am wrong. Turnovers and penalties could play a factor here but once again for an early season game this more often than not favors the home team.

Brees 2004 was more an aberation than a normal year for Drew. No Gates - He's due to come back to Earth this season.

We couldn't have been luckier to go up against the chargers. They have a nice rush defense, but it hasn't been that great against good running backs, and they have no pass rush to speak of. Their secondary also isn't great. We're going to toast them, especially if they bring the blitz. I guarantee you they'll be punished for it.

Look for us to throw early. Remember with Vinny early on, that was his formula. Throw on 1st, then later on give a full dose of JJ. I remember Bill saying that he was having Bledsoe practice against the blitz a lot this summer, so we'll see.

Good info, Nors. I think we've got a better chance than the Charger fans are giving us credit for. They are in a "12-4 Wonderland" right now. Last year, we were in that same dreamworld after going 10-6. Brees will see pressure from our newly revamped defense and A.J Smith and Co. will wish they hadn't sent that paperwork into the league that eventually suspended Gates for this game.

As I told Phoenix-Talon in his thread: "San Diego is a team coming off a remarkable season, but they are not an elite team.". The Chargers' 2003 4-12 season and their turnaround 12-4 season last year doesn't compare with... say... the Rams' 1998 4-12 season and St. Louis' 1999 13-3 Super Bowl season.

All the pieces were in place for the Rams to jump to the elite level. The Chargers simply took advantage of their schedule as any good team would. Nothing, which the Bolts have done over the offseason, leads me to believe that they are somehow 'unbeatable' now.
