I lived Alameda for a short time around 1983-1984. (Father was in the Navy) I was too young and Slayer / Metallica were really just starting to boom at the time. Around that time, I was just mainly listening to AC/DC, Ozzy, Dio, Iron Maiden, Zeppelin, and the like. I didn't start listening to Metallica till early 1985 (I was sold the second I heard For Whom the Bell Tolls) and Slayer until I heard of them during all the hoopla prior to their South of Heaven release in 1988.
You would have loved the Bay Area concert scene of the 80's. Metal was always going on. One concert sticks out to me though, Iron Maiden playing at Oakland Colosseum. They burst out on stage singing "Somewhere In Time", and a big boot flies up and hits THE Bruce Dickenson in the mouth. He throws the mic down and leaves the stage. Iron Maiden keeps playing three songs without Dickenson. He finally returns and is pissed. He says
"Every time we come to this town something stupid happens! We are done with you Oakland. Thank you for breaking my front tooth!"
To their credit, I have never seen Iron Maiden play in Oakland again. They favor San Jose since then.
