Sanity Check

The defense played very well and Kris Richard is having a meltdown from a busted play.

The offensie played, well offensive....while Linehan and Garrett looked numb.

Its the same hand wringing from people who are shocked that the sun comes out every day. First of all, it was a pre season game that the Cardinals played to win, we played to evaluate.

Yes, even a coach should be getting chewed out, but who knows.

If anyone is under any premise we re making the play offs, reality is going to frighten you. We re not, nor is it in the plans. Yes the team as a whole is better than this, no its not as good as you think. This off season was better than most, but no way is it competing for anything post season. Enjoy the season for what it is. another wasted year of some guys playing football. We win, great, we lose, wont matter in the scheme of life.

Our coaching/scheme requires superior talent at multiple positions, many might not be aware of that. Back ups get exposed very quickly in that scenario...

Like someone said, I believe in the game day thread, why is it the other teams backups always perform better than our backups? The clear answer is coaching. Our team was not prepared, not sure I've ever seen such a bad performance since Tampa Bay was an expansion team, preseason or not..

I am forever the optimist and would never over react to a preseason game, but... -8 turnover differential is Chaz Green bad.

Our back ups just need to be better. Its the same story every year.

You cannot have the best RB, best RT, best guard, best center, one of the best LB and young QB sitting out and expect a clean game. This board is cracking me up that they expect to see no drop off with all these high salaries / high draft picks sitting on the sidelines.

Example: Looney did very well in place of Fredrick but he is not the same caliber, no one is. He's the best in the league so anyone else will be some drop off.

My point is everyone is on suicide watch because a bunch of backups played like crap. Do you really think the backups get tons of reps over the starters in practice? Do you want Dak, Zeke and the rest to not practice so we can "develop" our bench?

Get a grip people. The ineptitude of the offense means nothing last night. Most of those guys will never see the field in a real game.

We should be getting excited for the defense. No irving, woods or lee and we still looked pretty dominate IMO. If we run the ball (which we will) and played suffocating defense (which we should be able to), we will win a ton of games.

Please don't put a ton of concern in preseason games

Those who say Looney did very well didnt watch the game. HE was NOT holding up in the middle.

You can't call yourself a HC and put a team out there that gives up 8 turnovers!

The scheme and coaching are horrendous. Unless there are all pros at most position executing the offense goes nowhere.

problem is Garrett needs the the best RB, best RT, best guard, best center, one of the best LB and young QB to just go 9-7. This team doesnt look well coached

Unfair comment - when he had those he had 13-3 and 12-4 seasons. Stop the hyperbole please.

What would you expect from two milquetoast intellectuals who fear conflict?

It is almost to funny to see how fans react to a preseason game especially with key personnel out. Sure the backups played against the Cardinal starters and still everyone looks at the score and goes into a funk. Lets review for a minute.

A bad punt muffed by the 3rd string punt returner trying to impress to make the team. Austin and Beasley will be the punt returner while Lenoir is still hoping to make the team. Our backup QB decided he was better than a 7 time Pro Bowler in Patrick Peterson, really, get over it, the best QBs in the game had given pick six to Peterson. Rush will learn from his mistakes if not then Mike White will take his spot or someone else will.

The long TD run was great blocking at the point of attack and bad angle by the rookie FS and missed assignments by rookie LBs that are probably going to be the PS guys not on the 53. Sorry but overall the defense for us all night was great down to good.

Fans should be looking at individuals in preseason to see potential starters to hopefully good backups. Trying to make sense of a preseason score or evaluate a team when one team is playing starters and the other backups is just an effort in futility. Real things start on September 9th and then we can evaluate the team. Right now every team expects to go 16-0 although we know that cannot happen.

Want a prediction? Well, after the game with Carolina then we can talk otherwise now it is based on nothing that is real.

:hammer:

Player reliant.

Here's what I think. I think that most fans watched a team go from 12-4, on the verge of playing for a Championship to a season where we went 4-12, because we lost our starting QB and we had no backup. You can say that the backups don't get the reps and that's true, to a point, but you still gotta have a guy. I think that this is a real concern for us and I think people realize that.

curious-do u think Garrett is a good head coach?

Unpopular opinion: he’s an above average coach who can win in this league. And I think that he has gotten better over time. Let’s remember that he is only a year removed from being coach of the year.

His strengths are his leadership and management skills. No doubt he’s smart, coming from a football family and Ivy League school. I like his aggressiveness on 4th down. I like our run first offense that plays to the strengths of our personnel.

His weaknesses are mostly related to game-day coaching and his inability to make adjustments. He’s inflexible and sticks with tactics too long.

All in all: he’s not in the top 5 coaches in the league but he can win in this league, especially with a good staff and a talented team.

Unfair? If anything you just gave validation to the comment. Everything has to be 100% PERFECT for Garrett to look like he knows what he's doing. And he will still find a way to screw it up.

Take just one small piece away and this is what you get.....

Garrett is a .559 winning percentage coach, career. He has a loosing record in the playoffs. There are currently 15 Head Coaches in the league with better career winning percentages, with 5 Coaches who are rookies. I think it is fair to say that Jason Garrett, to this point in his professional career is the text book example of Average, at best. I would not say he is above average because the data does not seem to support that position. Maybe even less then average, at this point.

OP said that with his best players he can only achieve 9-7. I pointed out that he has been 12-4 and 13-3 in the two years he had the talent, and he bombed of course when he didn’t.

Nothing more said nothing less.

anyone can win with as u say "a good staff and a talented team". I dont even put Garrett in the good category
his 12-4 year was Romo. His 13-3 year was the league not knowing how to play Dak or Zeke. It had very little to do (if anything) with Garrett. If Garrett was a good coach last year's team would have made a better showing. Belichik could win without Brady. Philly won without Wentz. Garrett has problems without 22 all stars. He coaches like Chip Kelly which is I have a game plan and the players better execute the plays. A good coach knows how to play with his strengths and to the opponent weaknesses. Garrett cant. Garrett also cant adjust as the game dictates. He'll stick to a gameplan to the end and blame the players. Without the 2 years u mentioned Garrett is below .500.
I dont care about winning yesterday but the team looked poorly coached and sloppy
