Cowboys 2017 roster: Three fan-favorites that might not make the team

Don’t get too attached to your pet cat.

Training camp begins in a couple weeks and your Dallas Cowboys will be back out on the field doing football things. And with it will come weeks of scrutinizing players performances. Some players will heat up, others will fade. The roster projections will be all over the place as we try to get an idea of how the new 2017 Cowboys will look come September. We all have our favorites, but our love for certain players isn’t always enough to justify keeping them on the 53-man roster. Here are three fan-favorites who might get sent packing.

Rico Gathers
I guess I should have warned everyone that you’re not going to be happy about some of the names that make this list. So we might as well just start off with the most unpopular one. Rico Gathers is a player that many fans are jacked up to see this year. At 6’8”, the former Baylor basketball player offers up an athletic giant with a huge catch radius. The red zone target appeal is salivating, I get that. But as a sixth-round draft pick who was stashed (and not claimed) on the practice squad last year, it’s clear that he was facing a huge learning curve before he’s ready to make the roster.

"I went from a person that was completely oblivious of a situation to now, I feel like an animal," he said earlier this Spring. "I feel like I have come into my own over the past year, just in my development with everything, from blocking to route running to being able to make those athletic plays that you see on Sundays. I really feel like this could be my breakout year and I feel like I could really contribute to this offense in the right situation.

It’s great that he feels that way, but the kid still has a ways to go before he’s ready for the big leagues. Cowboys tight end coach, Steve Loney recognizes this.

Loney says while that's all well and good, he'd like to see Gathers take the next step first before he starts fitting him for the crown.

“He’s a young man with a lot of talent, but over the years I’ve seen guys who can run plays off cards in scout team but have trouble transitioning,” he said. “I don’t believe that’s going to be him. He has to realize that reading coverage on the run -- not knowing what the coverage will be, which you know when you’re on scout team and see it on the card -- those are the things that will add details to make him a really excellent tight end.”

What’s standing in his way?

Gathers won't sniff the 53.

Spend a draft pick and pay a roster salary for a practice squad player, you're giving him every chance to make the roster. You don't invest that much into a player to let another team reap the benefits.

He will have to earn his spot but I don't get that sort of pessimism on a player with the upside and buzz that Gathers has.

They can keep Brown and Gathers, even if both will be inactive for a while.
First, the can pick up a roster spot by Keeping Rod Smith as the 3rd RB, 2nd FB, or they can even keep him as the 3rd RB and only FB, depending on how Keith Smith looks this year.

Second, it depends on how the depth, or supposedly depth at DL & DB they have. Maybe 8 DL stand out so well, they do not need to go deep there at all. Same for DB's, maybe only 9 are worthy to keep.

I agree. Unless he completely implodes during preseason, I believe he is safe for the reasons you've mentioned here.

Irvings suspension essentially guarantees Moore makes it at least for the first month.

Cooper is the one who may be in a dogfight. Clearly the team wants him to claim hat LG spot but I think he has stiff competition from several guys who are comparable. While Cooper performed decently in Cleveland for a few games last year, he's not the guy teams rated as a 1st round prospect several years ago. Not close. The question now is can he even be a consistent average or better starting OG. Same goes for Chaz, Bell and Looney. And if Looney is the best we can do, ring the alarm.

Fan favorites? Favorites for what?

Yes, it's odd to call them fan favorites.

Yes, in terms of messages boards they are the Pet Cats of many people this off-season, but the general fan base has no idea who they are.

It's not a stretch that think that a UDFA and practice squad player from last season and 2 cast-off types won't all make the 53.

I would bet significant money that at least 1 makes the 53. Decent money that 2 make it and a small wager that all 3 make it.

I actually the probably of making the roster are in this order:
Rico
Cooper
Moore

Cooper is really good. Go watch his tape with Cleveland. Not only that he will play between the best LT and the best Center in the league.

He looked looked good to me in those 3 games. I would say he was at least NFL average with flashes being being better than average.

Staying healthy is his biggest challenge. He's had more injury issues than Chad Green, albeit over a longer period of time.

Do you know the last time he was injured?
