Dallas Cowboys superstar Orlando Scandrick just ended his engagement to reality star Draya Michelewith a NUCLEAR BOMB ... calling the whole thing a gargantuan mistake.

Less than one month after he proposed, Orlando tells TMZ Sports, "I have made the decision to call off the engagement and permanently end the relationship I had with Draya."

"In hindsight, it was a poor decision to propose."

"I am anxious to move on with my life both personally and professionally."

As we previously reported, Orlando popped the questionto the "Basketball Wives LA" star back in June with a massive diamond ring ... just one month after they had broken up.

Before that, they had been dating pretty seriously for about 2 years.

We've reached out to Draya for comment -- so far, no word back.

Just a few days ago, Draya was talking about how excited she was for the wedding and told TMZ Sports about plans to invite Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

When you buy a $600K ring, you're not really that confident in the relationship. When you see women with these massive diamonds, that often means that either hubby doesn't trust her, or he majorly screwed up and had to pay her to stay.

Real relationships find more meaningful things to do with that much money.

Assuming he's getting the ring back, I'm happy for him,,,, he would have regretted that for freaking-ever.

I'm sure this isn't intentional but curiosity is eating at me.

What's your opinion about a relationship involving a $500,000 engagement ring?

Was it $600k? I don't remember.

Will he get it back?
