Age and cost. Melton will get 9-10 million if the contract is extended.

If they pick up his option, it's 3 years, 24M (8M per season average). That's reasonable considering that he's only 27.

If they drafted Easley and he and Melton split the snaps in the base defense evenly and both played in the Nickel, then they would each play 67% of the snaps if the teams was in Nickel 1/3rd of the time. If the team played more Nickel, which happens in many games, then their snaps would be more than 67%. A quality defense usually has a strong rotation.

Ran through a bunch of mock drafts, and if Barr is not there at 16, there are practically no options for WDE. Unless we trade down and try to get a Lawrence, Attachou or Ford. But if we stay put and Barr is gone, those options are not going to be there for us at 47.

8M compared to 9-10M is not significant. 2nd round pay rate is an average of 1M for 4 years. Do the math. The money is spent better else where. Melton is hardly a perennial pro-bowler.

If they're just drafting to save money, they should take a CB. CBs get paid more than DTs. The franchise tag for CBs is several million higher than for DTs.

With a CB, they can cut Carr and keep Melton. Another option would be to draft WRs. Dez is inline for a huge contract. They could just use the 1st, 2nd and 3rd on WRs to take the place of Dez. They would probably save about 10M+ per year doing that. Maybe they should trade up to draft a LT. Tyron is going to get paid huge money. Might as well just save the money. I mean, just like Melton, he's only gone to the Pro Bowl once.

When Melton played under Marinelli, he was considered the best or 2nd best 3-tech DT in the league. He has been in the NFL 4 years. They played him at DE as a rookie because he was 269 pounds when drafted. By his 3rd season (2nd playing DT) he went to the Pro Bowl. The season after that he got injured and missed most of the games. Yep, I guess that 1 Pro Bowl in his 3rd season with no chance to repeat due to injury is "not a perennial pro-bowler".
