Schefter: We Just Signed Allen Rossum! Released Cletis

If he gives us 1 td down for the rest of the year it is a great signing.

Hey, I'd settle for a couple-three 40 yard plus returns... he had 5 of those last year, in 13 games played...

Well, here's hoping I am wrong. Not really all that excited about this pickup.

Pollyanna Bear will do his best to pump you up, ol' buddy... :D

FWIW Crayton is averaging more per return.

Which is probably more a reflection of the Niners' punt return units versus the Cowboys'...

I think it's hilarious that before it happened and it was suggested by myself and others as a good move, certain posters shot it down.

Now some of the same, are saying its a good move. What gives?

All that is great if he can reproduce but I'm more concerned about the 3 previous years where he was nothing special.

So we should just ignore what he did last year??

With that said I really hope Rossum can contribute. I'm not getting my hopes up or anything but if he can provide good field position, it does nothing but help the team.

There ya go... I think he'll do that...

Maybe Crayton will be traded. Why not put Ogletree in the slot or maybe even Sam Hurd. Put 'em both out there in the four wide sets. Line Witten or Martellus up in the slot, too. The Cowboys also have Jesse Holley and Johnson on the P/S.
Just last week Crayton questioned the play-calling in the Denver game suggesting the Cowboys run more which probably was not well received by the coaching staff. It wouldn't break my heart if Crayton does get traded.

Prediction: Before the season is over, Rossum will return a kickoff for a touchdown.

Sounds like the Pukeman prediction to me. ;)

Crayton's average is usually inflated because he calls so many fair catches, even when nobody is close to him. If he doesn't fair catch it, it's usually because he has plenty of room to run.

Rossum has called for only one fair catch out of 13 punts fielded this season. Crayton has called for eight out of 18. If Crayton had returned some of those fair catches for an average of 4 yards, it would lower his average, but it would have been better for the team.

Since 2007, Crayton has had one fair catch for every 1.3 returns. Rossum has had one fair catch for every 3.9 returns. So, if we make Rossum our punt returner and he can average anywhere close to what Crayton did (8.0 ypr) while calling roughly one-third as many fair catches, we'll come out ahead.

No, didn't say that at all. Just trying to point out that you shouldn't ignore a number of years previous to last year.

I was thinking about the FC angle. Thanks for the info.

Thanks, was thinking the same thing. His 8 yd avg is really bad since he seemingly requires no one within 15 yards of him to attempt a return.

I guess i like the signing of Rossum. Is SF planning on using Crabtree on PR's? Otherwise i guess i could use the old Mickey Spags line, if he's so good why is he available. :)

Please everyone...enough of the annointing oil for guys who show something in the preseason. Hurd has been preseason MVP for 4 yrs and has 1 real TD to show for it...

the most over used and annoying phrase on this site by a country mile.

Ever consider the possibility that the teams he played for in those seasons had rather bad special teams?? I haven't done the research, just throwing out a possibility...

That might explain how he suddenly managed to put up numbers closer to what he put up in his prime last season... his kickoff return average was surely inflated by that one 104 yard kickoff return in 08, but he had no similar long punt returns to skew that stat...

So how would you explain him suddenly ranking 2nd in the NFL in punt returns last year??

You are crazy. Certifiably. Rossum is top 5 ALL TIME in returns and is FIRST among all the active returners RIGHT NOW. In 2008 (that is LAST SEASON)Rossum is coming off career high kickoff returns (26.8 ypr_3rd best in NFC in 08) and punt returns (14.9 ypr_second best in NFL in 08). Not TEN YEARS AGO, but last year he was recognized as one of the best at his position, which is RETURNING.

Rossum is still fast, and more importantly PLAYS FAST, maybe not as fast as he was when he won the NFL's Fastest Man competition in 2005, but he is still better than any returner currently on the Cowboys' roster.

Its just puzzling why the Niners would deactivate him then, he hasnt played in several weeks. He did have a great season last yr.

I've still seen no reason given for it, or the release.

Are we seriously debating a roster move that cost us Cletis? I mean seriosuly, I read thing slike why waste a roster space and such. WE ARE TALKING ROSSUM FOR CLETIS.........what the hell?

It's like trading a sack of dirt for a sack of more dirt.....you people crack me up.

But it's Cletis man, Cletis!!!11!!!

Have you no shame????

If it gives us better field position, by all means.

I really don't care one way or another who's returning punts back there as long as they catch the ball.

Maybe someone can name the year, I think it was either when we were really really terrible, or maybe like '05 or '06 or something. I remember watching muffed punt after muffed punt and it was the most frusturating thing to hold my breath after every kick.
