News: Schein:Cowboys 2nd best D

Bill Parcells 2003 defense was number one in points number 2 in yards. (or vice versa) But if we can reach that level of success again we won't miss Zeke that much at all.

A lot of people forget that The Triplets had an awesome defense that helped them win 3 super bowls.

The main thing the current defense needs to justify this high ranking is generate turnovers better.
Perfectly put. More turnovers leads to less field to go down to score. We need that more this season.

............and not get gashed for 250+ yards in a playoff game. That would help too.

I think it's easy to see how and where this defense is going to be tested. Even in an article praising them, there is no mention of run defense or the defensive tackles. And based on how they performed in their last game, I think you can rest assured that teams are going to be testing this run defense.

And not just turnovers, but pick-6s from your DBs. In the Jason Garret Era, there have been 7 pick 6s from DBs (thank you profootballreference player game finder). Dallas went 6-1 in those games.

In the 92-95, SB years (less than half the time), they had the same 7.

Turnover in general from Jason Garret Era mid2010-2018: 95 interceptions, 87 fumbles - 182 total in 8 1/2 season
Turnovers from 92-95: 81 interceptions (81),

For comparison, I selected the Browns from 2010-2018, and that sorry team had 6 pick-6s from DBs. The Bears have had 21. Even the despicable, dysfunctional Skins have had 7.

Fumbles recovered not tracked by pfr, so no data But the interceptions are 81 in 4 seasons vs. 95 in 8 1/2. Pick-6s from DBs are the same. The DBs on this team need to make more plays and they can be helped by a better pass rush. Until this defense is more than just a get off the field defense (that often surrenders leads in the 4th quarter as they wear down), it won't be a championship defense.

This is so true.

Seeing a pick 6 as a cowboys fan, is like seeing a unicorn.

It’s a play that changes the entire game. And you’re right defensive td’s have been very rare here lately.

Oh yes they will. Without Zeke the defense may be out there 35 minutes a game or more. Therefore it will not be effective.
This D is not to the point of a Ravens or Bears old defenses.

so does this mean our offense is gonna suck? we can't ever have two top units...

I agree on everything but there is somewhat of a difference. The Cowboys defense in the 90s brought blitzes. The guys in coverage played man but they were also playing an area just in case the passes were coming quick due to the blitz.

Rod made a living off of zone coverage and rushing 4 prior to coming here. With this defense, his scheme is switched to man because we don't have the line to get pressure right away to be effective in zone. What fans forget though is that when Monty Kiffin was here as a DC and consultant, the Cowboys were giving up a lot of yards but they were getting turnovers due to the defense looking at the QB instead of the receivers.

The only way this team is going to generate turnovers is if Rod calls up more zone blitzes.

The most famous example of this is Larry Brown's 2nd INT in Super Bowl XXX. Cowboys blitzed, O'Donnell panicked and threw the ball to a spot, had miscommunication with receiver, and Brown was the only player in the area.

Although, notably, that blitz wasn't so much well-executed as it was that Dallas got lucky. The defense left Hastings completely open. Had O'Donnell just kept his calm for 1 second longer and scanned downfield properly, it could have been a deep Pittsburgh touchdown pass.

LOL

No, they're not.

Above average, but not elite.

Well I came in to argue against the #2 best defense......but then I looked at the list.......maybe you can argue the Bears are better...hell I'd even agree but its not too many more units I'm taking over the Cowboys. Cowboys are flawed and not perfect by any means but so is everyone else on that list.

Amazingly, we were 5th in the NFL in run defense last year. But, you can bet every team on our schedule has dissected the Ram game and will try to imitate their success.

Yes we were, but among the highs, there were some inexplicable lows, where teams with good offensive lines like the Panthers, Colts and Rams ran all over the defense all day.
