Schoon another draft bust

He was severely over drafted.
He's a solid JAG, and I don't mean that as a dis.
An NFL roster has 53 players. You need JAGs.
They can be rotational players (Solomon Thomas, for example), back ups, special teams players etc. A 3rd TE is a JAG. He likely contributes on ST, and makes a play or 2 a game (could be a key block on a 3rd and 1, or even a catch here and there).
Schoon is a solid #3 TE, at best.

In college, he reminded me of a poor mans Charlie Kolar, who was a 5th rounder for the Ravens a few years back. Big, good blocker, a semi star in college but a JAG in the NFL. In 2024, Kolar had 9 receptions for 131 yards and a TD. He mostly saw time as a blocking TE (on a great running team) and ST. Kolar was actually much better than Schoon in college.

The Ravens have a Pro Bowl #1 TE (Mark Andrews) and a really talented game breaker (for the position) in Isiah Likely as their #2. So Kolar is a great fit as a #3. A 5th rounder is a fair value for a #3 TE who's main job is to block on running plays and play ST. Spann Ford is a solid #3 for us.

The problem is our top 2 TEs are below average.
I like Ferguson, but he needs to step up. Right now, he's a below average #1 TE. And Schoon is just not a #2, yet he was drafted in round 2. For a TE, a 2nd round pick should get you a #1. He showed nothing in college that would indicate anything but a possible #3 TE in the NFL.

I was shocked when we called him on Day 2, he just was not a Day 2 pick, and there is also the age thing with him, which further lowered his value. He was a Day 3 pick, but we got desperate and he was the highest TE on the board left so we grabbed him out of desperation. A great example of how drafting for need can bite you in the Xss.
