Schoon another draft bust

I still maintain that Schoonmaker has probably has the most pathetic looking highlight package coming out of college I've ever seen.

Bar none.
He is a blocking tight end. He has bricks for hands and is terrible at catching the ball.

The Cowboys never learn. They drafted Bennet when they have Witten and Bennett went to waste on the bench behind Witten. Bennet left Dallas and became made the pro-bowl. So when they had Ferguson, the drafted Schoonmaker and he is wasting behind Ferguson. Why draft him in the first place? Schoonmaker has shown nothing as a pass catching TE. And he is mid at best as a blocker.

Spann-Ford on the other hand is an excellent blocker as a TE. He has value in the run game and as an occasional receiver.

I think a few people on this forum wanted the Cowboys to take O'Cyrus Torrence, the OG out of Florida who was drafted by the Bills with the next pick. I believe he is starting for the Bills now.
I’m one of the people that wanted Torrence. Still a bit upset we didn’t take him.

So ragging on the DT Mazi has almost become a piñata at a birthday party on this board. At the time you could argue DT was needed . With Schultz and Ferguson here how do you argue taking a TE round 2 for Schoon was sound value ? I thought TE that yr round 2 was bizarre .

In my mind both Fant and or Fairweather should be brought up from the PS and to be honest what’s Spann Fords value ? This is a year that may turn into cleaning out roster time to see who makes you better today and tomorrow.
its the typical 2nd round bust for the cowboys. here is the list of 2nd round busts cowboys have drafted. 2024, 2025 not included (yet)

  • Schoonmaker
  • Sam Williams
  • Joseph
  • Diggs (no one can say he is not a bust at this point)
  • McGovern
  • Conner Williams
  • Awuzie
  • Jaylon Smith
  • Randy Gregory
  • Escobar
  • Crawford
  • Bruce Carter
now, some contributed a little. but none turned into any solid starter for the Cowboys and contributed. couple of them went elsewhere and contributed. the only one that kind of contributed was Lawrence, but he was often injured and was way over paid.

that's a long period of futility in the second round.

I mean it’s not a myth. It’s in comparison to everyone else in the league. I think mostly in the first round. They have more All Pros and Pro Bowlers then anyone in a certain span.
And fewer playoff wins. Isn't winning in the playoffs the ultimate goal? Maybe they should draft fewer all pros and draft to win super bowls.

My expectation of this offense, WR1, WR 2, TE1, and RB 1 get almost every target . The other eight get one target each, maybe.

I am curious how New England changed that with their 2 TE emphasis.
They drafted/acquired TEs w/ WR skills. And played them as WRs. They weren't really TEs.

Well…I’m just answering his question I didn’t say it was working. The reputation came from those successes in the first round mostly offensive linemen.

I was screaming on this board for weeks coming up on the draft that Dallas should select Torrence O'Cyrus. I was repeatedly told they didn't need a guard. He is not just a run of the mill guard.

Schoon is more of the same. A future star on the flag football team of some big corp who was brought him in to win their championship.

They will soon see he is a bust at that amateur level too.

wow that’s quite a list . Im seriously Re thinking McClay and the scouts . This years prize goes to EZ the diminutive edge out of BC who looks like an off-season in the Frisco Taj- Mahal weight room and strengthening regimen are needed to avoid Sam Williams 2nd round curse comparisons .

Dallas didn't have enough holes in its roster, so they created another need when they let Schultz walk- when just a few dollars more would have retained him. Dallas could have had Schultz AND a second round pick, or Schoon. Dallas used a second round pick to literally downgrade the position.

I don't consider Williams a bust, at least not yet.

I don't consider Diggs a bust either. McGovern and Williams did very well with Buffalo and Miami when they left Dallas. Awuzie has had a good if not spectacular career. He is still in the league.
Smith was a risky pick given his injury but he made the pro-bowl before falling off a cliff.

Gregory was another high risk high reward pick.

Crawford wasn't great but he was in the league for a while. Same with Bruce Carter. I am not sure what expectations you set for 2nd round picks.

Crawford was a very good player forced to play out of position due to the mishandling of personnel.

Conner, McGovern and Awuzie accomplished it after they left in dallas. they didn't contribute here (which points to our draft evaluation and why we couldn't find the right role for them).

Williams in his 3rd year with our anemic pass rush and his big mouth...he is a bust until he proves otherwise.

and that's the point, the 2nd round is where Jerry likes to gamble. its a wild wild west shooting, seemingly without a plan.

2nd round picks are expected to be contributors, turn into starters, solid and some turn into high level contributors. instead we have those who stuck around the league....

I don't expect a 100% hit rate, but we have been close to 0%.

We all knew this was a bad pick the second it was made. Mike wanted LaPorta in 1, but we went with a way worse player instead. And then doubled down on that mistake by trying to get Mike his TE who was also a worse player.

McGovern was a third rounder, FWIW.

And was a pretty good player here and is for Buffalo. Not his fault he tore a pec and lost his rookie year.

The entire 2023 draft was garbage outside of overshown who can’t seem to get on the field and that followed up the 2022 draft that yielded Tyler smith and I guess bland but it also wasn’t stellar
