By establishing a vertical run game and sticking with it, Schottenheimer has taken the focus off of the passing game. He has forced defenses to back off and guard the line.
This is why statistics lie; high passing yards do not make a winning team, and they certainly do not signify that a quarterback is elite.
A team has to have a balanced attack, with one piece complimenting the others, and vice versa.
The Cowboys offense is moving the ball because defenses no longer merely have to defend Dak Prescott. The run game is gashing them deep, and this creates openings in the secondary as defenses are forced to account for the possibility of run or pass on every down.
The best quarterback isn't the one with the highest passing yards, but the one who can be counted on to make good decisions, with the accuracy and moxy to stand in and make plays when it's his time to step up.
I think Schotty is doing a great job.
