Schottenheimer notes from Combine

Highlights from Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer’s availability at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis:

- Hasn't spoken to George Pickens but plans to before the tag is placed. Still wants him back long-term

- The starting point of evolving the offense in 2026 is "moving George Pickens around"

- Donovan Ezeiruaku and Marist Liufau are now OLBs

- Says Shavon Revel Jr. is "finally healthy"

- Comfortable with the current state of the RB room behind Javonte Williams. Wants to use Hunter Luepke more in 2026

- Complimented Christian Parker's ability to get young players to produce early. He wants players that can play early (bad sign for injury red flags such as Jermod McCoy?)

- Going to move the 3 DTs around, Kenny Clark expected to get most of the NT work

- Wants balance of young and veteran in the EDGE room

- Wants T.J. Bass and Brock Hoffman back as depth OL but understands they could be starters elsewhere in the league

- Isn't an arm length hater

What does that note about Revel being "finally healthy" tell you...

The 3-4 talk is bizarre.

Where we getting the LBs?

Eze has 4.8+ 40 speed and is a DE

It looks like they want a 5-2-4 hybrid? With the 3 DTs

Need another NT for the rotation

Stay with the 4-2-5 and fix what we have.

Sounds great in theory, until they actually hit the football field. I actually like Leupke but both McCarthy and Schottenheimer have come up empty on the Leupke promises

If you think you can find a player at 4 offer Leupke to Pittsburgh and send them one of the 5’s . Try and replace Lance Mingo void.

Get another defensive player with the 4 . Mafah & Davis can more than make up for Leupke and Blue is the change of pace speed element . Read Schotts comments you will not see RB in this draft . Or Tight end

We have so much parity now in the league its hard to get to the big dance. Then you factor in refs. Injury. Coaching. Hopefully we properly addressed the latter.

Know what, he gets crapped on a lot but the reality is, not sure we win a sb that year without Barry. If he was anything he believed in continuity and not trying to reinvent the wheel. How many coaches have we witnessed over the years get too cute? Not in Dallas solely but across the league? Nothing kills a team quicker than stubbornly letting your ego do your thinking. To Barrys credit, he checked his ego at the door, looked at the temperature in the room and said hey, let's be us, do what we do best, do not mess up a good thing. I know Aikman hates him, but its dumb. The man is a winner at every level. Barry ain't Jimmy or Tom, WHO IS, but he was hardly a bystander. That narrative is ridiculous. Not sure if your kidding by mentioning Barry but its actually worth including him.

Eze I can understand. but not sure the thinking and reasons behind moving Liaufu to OLB. we have needs at MLB having moved to a 3-4. he has better size than Overshown who will get run over by guards and blockers at 220. and given his injury history he can't take the pounding.

and if bass and hoffman are good enough to be starters, given bass just got the 2nd roudn tender, it makes the booker pick last year look even more stupid. I think booker is a great guard. great player, but man, guard depth vs. all the other holes we had obviously....

Leupke had a decent year last season, got more snaps it seemed.

"Comfortable with the RB room..."? How?

Javonte is nice but he's not lasting 17 games with his running style, a fresh contract - so he doesn't need to run like that anymore, and more tread worn on the tires from last year.

I swear this team and the Jones' have NO VISION. Sure...Javonte was a nice surprise. But you can draft a guy in the 3rd, 4th and 5th round who has a legit shot to take some snaps away and threaten to be the primary ball carrier...much less the 1st or 2nd round. Dak NEEDS A STUD RB...THIS IS PROVEN. (he also needs 2 all pro WRs to be "near-MVP", but ....)

One of Jerry’s better hires

EZ and Liafau are already labeled OLBs by the new coaches.
Even Greg Ellis played OLB in the 3-4. Besides, it’s not the old fashioned 3-4. It just uses more DTs who have one gap, but share the next gap over with another DT, thus the 1.5 gaps. It’s still about getting up field and being disruptive. Imagine 1 player covering the C-G gap and another covering the T-Edge gap, but they share the G-T gap, so get up field and be disruptive, but both guys help each other by adjusting down to the gap between them if the blocking and play require that. Just 1 example.

True, I’d sign Davis back too. I’m curious if either of last years RB picks can do anything to push for reps
Should be able to bring him back for cheap, and considering we played him over Blue, it would probably be a good idea. I'm still in favor of drafting a running back as early as the fourth round. We don't have any idea how Blue or Mafah are going to turn out, and we need to try to do everything we can to find someone who can at least be equal to Williams if he doesn't last.

FYI… I’ve never been an arms length hater either. As long as they reach his hands, what’s to complain about? That’s what I always say.

Glad to hear they aren't just counting on the draft
