Schottenheimer OTA press conference notes

This should help get Malachi Lawrence signed.

Or maybe he just refuses to sign here.

Two 1st rounders. Neither gets a second contact. One doesn't even get a first.

The BS he's using to justify the pass rush is the same that they used when we didn't need a lead WR. We'd just do it by committee.
So, you are saying that Gary and Lawrence and the rest are bs. Let's see how it plays out.

We could have yet another shutdown corner or we could trade him and have two 1sts and two 2nds in next year's draft.

Look how well he's covering Revel. Like glue.

- With DaRon Bland rehabbing from foot surgery, the work was spread around to Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel Jr. and Caelen Carson. Rookie first-round pick Caleb Downs worked in the slot along with Durant. Free agent addition Derion Kendrick, second-year player Trikweze Bridges and rookie fourth-round pick Devin Moore primarily worked with the second team.

- The backup running back position remains a competition. Phil Mafah looked good with his first-team reps, grabbing a touchdown in red zone work, as did Jaydon Blue. Mafah has specifically drawn a lot of praise for his work this offseason, with one source saying he is “night-and-day” different from last year. Blue has also been praised, with another source saying he’s more “locked in” right now on the details than he ever was in his rookie season. Undrafted free agent signing Dominic Richardson is further down the depth chart, but he was also mentioned for his grit and toughness.

- Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was the only player on defense not at practice, as he was excused on Thursday to prepare for his wedding Saturday in Tyler. He is expected back next week. Dee Winters and Shemar James were the linebackers working with the first-team with Overshown out, while Curtis Robinson and Justin Barron were with the second-team.

- It might just be because wide receiver George Pickens isn’t in attendance for OTAs, but recent free agent signing Marquez Valdes-Scantling picked up a lot of work with the first team Thursday. He was targeted by Dak Prescott a handful of times, and even bailed out his new quarterback on a throw that went behind him that he had to swat down to prevent P.J. Locke from intercepting it. He’s a big outside body who certainly stands out wearing the No. 11 jersey that still feels like Micah Parsons’ number sometimes.

- Staying at the wide receiver position, Ryan Flournoy got quite a bit of work in the slot. It’s more likely that it’s a wrinkle that head coach Brian Schottenheimer is trying to add to the passing game rather than a sign of some sort of permanent move, but it still shows the staff’s trust in what Flournoy can develop into heading into his third season. After a breakout campaign in 2025, Flournoy should be tasked with more this season.

- Schottenheimer has been open about a battle for the backup quarterback job. And while there isn’t a lot of stock that should be put into where that battle stands today, it was notable that Joe Milton III received more of the second-team reps on Thursday than Sam Howell did.

- The rehab group working off to the side Thursday included Bland, veteran safety free agent addition Jalen Thompson and second-year outside linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku. With Thompson out, Locke and Malik Hooker worked as first-team safeties, while Markquese Bell, Zion Childress and Alijah Clark rotated in with the second team.

"When Jerry hands me the Lombardi Trophy, I'm going to hand if off to you and then you give it to Klayton."

Wow, there is competition for starting LT, nice.

I think this says Dallas will keep four tackles, Guyton, Steele, Thomas, and Shelton.

When Shelton was drafted I felt like Dallas was moving on from Thomas. That they view Thomas as a starting caliber LT, I believe this is not an option anymore.
More undeniable evidence that Schottenheimer has more control than McCarthy ever did.

Jerry has always require that high draft picks start. It is, of course, his ego that made it a mandate.

Open, public, admittance that Guyton isn’t the starter would have never happened with McCarthy, or Garrett for that matter.

A good sign.

You think every coach Jerry hires is the best ........ and you have been saying the team is headed in the right direction since 2017
They look like they will win division this year. They have a shot. Do you disagree? It's good that they let the coaches pick their assistants and the new dbacks that they have added are a big improvement. It's going to be fun to watch.

Not necessarily, it’s becoming more common for good teams to have 3-4 guys who can get 6-8 sacks rather than one 12-14 sack guy.

2025 Seahawks are a great example. 7 sacks tied to lead the team and they were 3rd in the league in sacks and up there in pressures, DLaw actually led them in pressures.

Ideally, you want multiple guys who can consistently beat 1-on-1 blocking. That’s the best way to have a balanced but highly effective Dline.

Now if we have that with our guys is yet to be seen, but the philosophy is nowhere as ludicrous as the old “wide receiver by committee” coupled with the guys they had on the team. Even that strategy wouldn’t have been terrible if they had a bunch of #2 types, not a bunch of 4’s.
Seattle is the example used every time, but what are some other current great defenses that fit this description?

I think the idea is something put forward when it’s teams who don’t have good pass rushers need to prop up their roster.

Right now we have maybe one guy capable of getting eight sacks, let alone four or five
