Schottenheimer OTA press conference notes

Guyton vs. Thomas at LT.

I guess Drew Shelton is at least a year away and will be the swing tackle.

"Rashan Gary is a grown *** man,” according to HC Brian Schottenheimer.

He says he’s been blown away with his professionalism and leadership.

Talks about professionalism and then says he's a grown *** man.
Quite a professional way of saying he's mature.
Shoddy just has that kind of street cred.

You should see him dapping up the guys and sharing Courvasier after practices.

So he's saying that against the Giants, Downs will get burned for TDs by OBJ, Juju, and Slayton but not let it happen twice to the same guy in that game. Can't wait for the meltdowns around here and the b word to be thrown out a few times. Hopefully not by Rockport because he never gives up on people.

Is he a bust?
He had nagging injuries his first two years. So hard to say.
How about seeing what happens this year.
I don’t like the term bust until the book has been written. He has been horrible so far.not bad, horrible. But I refuse to accept there is no chance for improvement although he is about to turn 25 so that point is getting close.

But I’ve said a thousand times he had no business being a on an NFL field year one. We all knew on draft day he was too raw and needed time and that he didn’t have a full off-season to get work in year 1 and then year two again like you said he had injuries again that derailed his off-season. Even with this He absolutely should have been way better than he was last year. His technique was horrible. He was bad in both the run and pass game. It was pointed out in training camp and preseason how he was still lunging and completely taking himself out of plays and giving himself no chance to seal the edge when his man turned the corner on him and this continued in the regular season.

He has a long way to go just to be bad, let alone serviceable or good BUT he is young and still developing so it isn’t impossible that he takes a huge leap forward this year. I have no problem giving him a chance. My problem is the fact that they seemingly took no measure to bring anyone else in that has a chance to replace him if he doesn’t improve and no, I don’t count a mid round draft pick or young players who thus far haven’t been any better than him. Year after year this team pins their season on the hope that something not all that likely happens and year after year we seem surprised when it doesn’t happen. If we don’t bring a veteran OT in between now and week 1 we deserve what happens if Guyton struggles mightily again.

Seattle is the example used every time, but what are some other current great defenses that fit this description?

I think the idea is something put forward when it’s teams who don’t have good pass rushers need to prop up their roster.

Right now we have maybe one guy capable of getting eight sacks, let alone four or five
Great defenses are few and far between in today’s game anyways, but both the Patriots and Eagles had top 5 defenses last year and neither had a guy who had 9 or more sacks.

Upon research:

“Among the 14 actual NFL playoff teams, 6 teams featured at least one defensive player who reached the double-digit mark of 10+ sacks during the 2025 regular season.

The remaining 8 playoff rosters (Seahawks, Bills, Patriots, 49ers, Eagles, Panthers, Jaguars, and Steelers) navigated their path to the postseason tournament using more balanced, committee-driven pass rushes without an individual player hitting the 10-sack milestone.”

So yeah, I’d say it’s not a “prop a bad roster up” philosophy. It’s one that’s worked for not only the two Super Bowl teams, but the majority of teams that made the playoffs. Football is the ultimate team sport, it’s always better to have a lot of good than one great.

Wouldn’t be as cynical in thinking a roster philosophy you don’t agree with is one that doesn’t work or is only used as an excuse. There are multiple ways to build a champion and having a group effort in the pass rush department has proven to be one of them.

Yes you can be the Texans with two All-Pros, but that’s unlikely.

Based off last year, no. It was his first full year, though, so we'll see if he can develop. He's never going to have ideal speed/agility for either spot.

After last season it was said his future was as G . I’m surprised HC is talking him up as competition at T again .

As far as Shelton I get uneasy thoughts of Josh Ball Matt Waletzco . I’m surprised Hennessy the 49er FA hasn’t been mentioned .

This from the guy who says we have been heading in the right direction since 2017, been saying we were gonna go all in free agency since 2017.

You have an even worse record than rocky ....... and that is embarrassing.

You are an embarrassment.

He points out it’s EZ’s second year.

He was asked if Cowboys are satisfied with their pass rush given this week’s moves and says the best pass rushing teams they face “don’t necessarily have one guy. It’s easier to shut one guy down.”

We needed more grown *** men and less Hot Boyz.

The difference is that we don’t quit. You have as well as your fellow haters have all thrown in the towel. So now all you have is to come here and laugh at and make fun of anyone who has hope. I know which side has the best character and it ain’t you haters.

Maybe Shelton will be more like Doug Free. However, I felt better about the Free pick. The main knock on Free is that he was coming from a smaller school and needed to work on his strength. I believe he was called Doug Freak in college because of his movement skills, though.
