Schottenheimer praising how Guyton has looked in OTAs

That's dramatic. It's not about throwing them under the bus. It's about not BSing and saying every single player is the greatest of the greatest at everything they do, just like McCarthy did. There is a Grand Canyon sized gap between those two things. No one expects him to throw anyone under the bus, but when true, there is nothing wrong with saying a player still needs to work on some things or is coming along well but still has a ways to go or just a blanket "he's out there practicing hard". This has been part of the problem with this coddled team. But more pertinent for this board is the fact that fans believe it and then are surprised when the regular season rolls around and the player struggles after quoting all of these glowing reports from the preseason. My point is it would be great to have a real idea on how some of these guys are doing, but with Schotty, just like with Big Mike, don't believe what he says about how well a player is doing right now.

I don't agree with this assessment. Yes he struggled, but as a rookie with limited college snaps he just wasn't ready for the NFL game. Nor was he ready for the power of some of the best defensive lineman in the game that he faced right out of the gate. And he was asked to follow in the footsteps of a FHOF player, plus switch from the right to the left side of the line. No one should have been asked to do that, let alone asked to preform at a high level doing it.
When yo think about those facts it puts his season in a different light. With new (and I think better coaching), NFL snaps at LT and getting stronger in the offseason I expect a big jump in his game this season. Will it be FHOF Tyron Smith level of LT play? I doubt it, but again, no one should expect that from him.

I think some of this was the reason for some penalties and a loss of confidence.

Running the ball as well, both he and Steele looked better in games where the offense was balanced and teams couldn't just attack the QB.

Honestly what you're suggesting is exactly what Schottenheimer did say. The issue is its the Twitter era and the media shares one sentence out of probably a two minute answer from a coach and lets fans just run with it. Schotty even ended talking about the Tackles by saying he says everything with a slight pause because its May, and no one is in full pads and they are limited on what they can do until training camp gets here.

No, it's about not throwing them under the bus. As a HC, you lose a huge ton of credibility w/ the other players if you publicly reveal that a player isn't doing so hot. Can't base your wantings on the fans getting their little numnums crushed, that's irrelevant.

Plus, we were not going to win anyway, perfect time to get him some snaps so he'll be better this season. Hopefully.

We've ragged on Jerry in the past many times for not playing players who needed snaps to get better. Now he finally does and people want to complain about it?

The mistake was counting on a raw rookie to start in the first place.

I agree but how are you answering media questions for your player who isn't playing well and/or having some behavior issues? Flat out lying won't cut it.......they will see through that. That's what I'm saying by soft criticism.
 
I'm starting to worry Schotty is a sunshine and rainbows guy and when the losses start piling up after week 6 that whole act is going to ring very very hollow.

Yes, we all want to be privy to all info from Cowboys, but the truth is it's better if we're not. Even though we want to know all, mostly fans cannot handle all.

Think about these boards. The slightest iota of information/misinformation comes out, what happens? Everyone freaks. Think about it. Now imagine if the coach were to reveal all, as you are asking. Pandemonium. Complete chaos.

Lying/deferring/deflecting. That is how it is handled, and that's how it should be handled. Professionalism.

Depends. It matters not one wit if he's that way to the fans/media, it only matters as to how well he can control the players.
