Schottenheimer starts off OTA with some paintball

However, he didn’t set up any activities the first day of OTA’s that had nothing to do with football. Jimmy was so tough on his players during QTA’s he retired Randy White.
New CBA’s have resulted in a lot of changes since the Jimmy Johnson days, especially in the 2011 agreement.

I’m aware of that. There’s been a lot of changes since then. Pads don’t even come on for any teams until after the first week of camp.

Just replying to your comment about how tough Jimmy was during OTA’s and him retiring White. Not going to see that in today’s world.

In todays NFL world players are playing paintball to open OTA’s.

When he first took over the team he set up the lockerroom the way he wanted. Landry had his way and Jimmy had his own way. However, he didn’t set up any activities the first day of OTA’s that had nothing to do with football. Jimmy was so tough on his players during QTA’s he retired Randy White.
OTAs didn’t exist when Jimmy started in Dallas. A coach could demand what they wanted. There was no “voluntary”.

Folks like you mocked Schottenheimer for assigning lockers but when Jomky did it, it was genius.

You mock Schottenheimer having team building but are totally ok with Jimmy not only setting up dominos tables in the middle of the locker room but also knowingly tolerating a drug/prostitution “team building” site during his tenure.

It’s just hypocrisy but it doesn’t suit the obvious agenda.

And don’t get started on the Cowboys allowing players to use cocaine on the sideline during Landrys era along with other worse, more awful crimes.

We’ll see if this family atmosphere pays dividends this season.
Maybe, maybe not. But don’t see how it hurts. New coach wanting to try and change the atmosphere. I say it’s his job on the line so let him do what he thinks can help. Jerry is a much bigger distraction than a paintball game

They had offseason workouts during Jimmy’s coaching era. Jimmy was tough on them. This according Google.

“Yes, the Dallas Cowboys under Jimmy Johnson did have offseason workouts. Players were known to participate in voluntary offseason workouts, including running, lifting weights, and studying football, four days a week, starting a month after the season ended. Jimmy Johnson was known for his emphasis on hard work and intensity, both during the season and in the offseason.”

By the way I didn’t mock Schotty for assigning lockers. I mocked him for playing paintball on the first day of OTA’s.

When did they allow it? They had no idea it was going on. Get real!

I believe that came from a Texas Monthly and Sports Illustrated article. In the same Sports Illustrated article, Peter King reported that regular attendance at offseason workouts was six players in '89 (article: “Still A Long Way To Go”).

Bottom line is Schottenheimer is just getting started and he is not going to be allowed to do the things Jimmy did due to the CBA.

No one is allowed to do what a lot of teams were doing over 30 years ago. Just found it odd he has players playing paintball on the first day of OTA’s. He has players playing ping pong and paintball.

From Google:

“In 1989, when Jimmy Johnson took over as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, a significant number of players showed up for the offseason workouts. It's widely reported that a mere 17 players out of the required number showed up for the voluntary workouts, which created a stir.

In addition to the 17 players, it is also reported that Jerry Jones, the team owner, was present for the offseason workouts.”

From what I remember the attendance was good because players feared being cut.

I got the number 6 from the following article by Peter King:

https://vault.si.com/vault/1990/08/...y-not-improve-much-on-its-1-15-record-of-1989

Fourth to last paragraph in the article.

I have no recollection of what the real number was.

That’s what he reported. Can’t imagine only 6 players showing up. It was widely reported that only 17 players showed up. That’s been refuted. I remember reading in my Cowboys Weekly attendance was real good. With a new coach who was demanding and new ownership it got players to show up especially when Jimmy started cleaning house. Not easy finding jobs when you’re being cut from a team that went 3-13 the previous season.

A quote from Schotty’s presser today.

"The way we practice and the way I act at practice, my father is looking down from heaven going: 'What are you doing? That's not how you practice.“

Like I said, I have no personal recollection. I can barely remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, so I certainly can’t remember off-season workout attendance numbers from a specific season 35+ years ago.

I just shared what Peter King said about ‘89 attendance in his ‘90 article. It doesn’t really matter…Shottenheimer isn’t Jimmy, the teams are in completely different situations, and the ‘90’s NFL is dramatically different than today.

I think this is a big to-do about nothing as every team does these types of things. Here is what Bleeding Green Nation reported:

Last year marked the first time in Nick Sirianni’s head coaching tenure that the Eagles held a mandatory minicamp. That was a three-day stretch whereas this year the reigning Super Bowl champions only have one mandatory minicamp practice. The Eagles are the only NFL team hosting a sole day of minicamp; every other team has at least two days scheduled.

I would imagine the father of every current coach who had experience from back in the day would say the same thing.

My practices back in the day were dramatically different than all of my son’s and we didn’t have the luxury of a union behind us. My coach father would probably lose his job today with some of his sideline and practice antics.

I’m not sure why you are so concerned about a 1/2 day paintball game. There are so many other things to get worked up about before an offsite event that most every team conducts.
