Schultz appears to have established himself as the 1 TE

I believe, as always, folks on this site expect SO much from drafted players. It’s hard to argue at times bc of players like LVE, Martin, Fredrick, Dak, Zeke, that all have hit the field on fire. But people need to realize that’s a indication of how well the front office has drafted... it’s not the norm. Look around the league at other TE’s(1st seasons)that’s been drafted lately..
(1rd)OJ Howard, 34-565-5..
(1rd)Evan Engram 40-496-2..
(1rd)David Njoku 53-577-4..
(2nd)Gerald Everett 33-320-3..
(2nd)Mike Gesiki 21-181-0
(2nd)Dallas Goedert 30-307-4

Compared to Schultz who’s only played in 6 games in a 4 way timeshare at times..

(4th) Dalton Schultz 11-99-0
(Undrafted)Blake Jarwin 20-188-0

Schultz will get stronger and with a offseason to learn the playbook is invaluable. The more he plays with Dak, the better chemistry they are developing. I’d be surprised if Swaim is back next season, so Schultz will be a starter next season. And I’m not discounting the receiving ability of Jarwin, he seems like the perfect ‘James Hanna’ back up. Dallas needs to give up on the Rico Project and bring in a low cost blocking TE this offseason.

Side note: it’s an early prediction, but I personally believe Dallas will draft another OL with the second pick. That would be the best chance to find a plug-n-play starter with a late 2nd Rd pick imo.
I agree with you on the OL in the 2nd... it's the biggest need atm for the off-season.

Dalton Shultz is a 4th rounder, that's a decent investment, so maybe this guy can continue improving and gets an opportunity from Dak.

I have these as more of a need than TE. FA is filled with veteran TEs capable of playing well in DAL scheme.

(Should read "#1" in the header.)

Looking at snap counts since the WAS game, he's getting on-average about 50%, then Jarwin's getting around 35%, and Rico's left with 15%.

For what it's worth.
Great #3 TE, solid #2 TE, probably not the guy you want as your #1 TE. If we could sign a guy like Cook from the Raiders and walk out Cook, Swain, Shultz then the TE position would be all wrapped up.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Next season you could easily have 4 starters from the 2018 draft (LVE, Williams, Gallup and Schultz).
I would hope we target a TE early in April. This offense clearly operates with a true TE1 starting. Schultz looks like a #2.

Then again, there's also the FA route.

Any of these names get you aroused?

  • Jared Cook, Raiders
  • Benjamin Watson, Saints
  • Tyler Eifert, Bengals
  • Jeff Heuerman, Broncos
  • Maxx Williams, Ravens
  • C.J. Uzomah, Bengals
  • Jesse James, Steelers.

Cook is really good.

And Rico #4, right?

Looks like a dime a dozen guy to me.

Our first pick will probably be a TE.
I agree even though I think the team desperately needs an impact DT and one of those will probably be there when they pick. I think they will force a TE in the 2nd in order to put weapons around Dak, a TE that can stretch the field if possible. I think they want to see if Dak or what is around him is the problem.

Roy, I was 3/4 kidding about Rico... there's obviously still a sliver of a sliver of a chance that he does something that somehow saves his Cowboys career, but it does seem more likely that something like you outlined will be the opening day 2019 situation.

If you watch the Amari goal line jet sweep that got blown up, Schultz is the guy who missed the key block. I think it was Aikman that commented that Schultz looked like he was running the wrong play.

That's been the frustrating part for me. He's a Stanford alum so he's not a dummy, and Stanford is one of the few college teams left that runs pro-style blocking schemes with an in-line TE. I figured he'd at least come in knowing some of the basics, but his inability to even run the correct play is just maddening.

We'll see how he develops, since TE is a position that usually takes awhile. But so far he's looked meh as a blocker and hasn't made any plays that have impressed me as a receiver. I'm willing to give him another year, but I wouldn't count on him for anything either.

Swaim was getting first team number of snaps before his injury--I think.
