Scoop City talking about the hold up between Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys

Seems to be several articles over last couple of days about Dak's contract. They all tend to center around the length of the contract. From what I gather, Dak wants a 4/5 year deal while Dallas wants a 2/3/4 year contract. Will this hang things up through the start of the season or will they find middle ground which would seem to be 4 years or 3 years with an option year.

It also seems that the amount (average per year) has been done and most likely the bonus money guaranteed. The structure of the contract will obviously include void years to spread out the bonus money. The question becomes the total amount which will also depend on the years.

It seems to me that a 3 or 4 year deal benefits Dak more than the Cowboys as he is 31 so it means he gets another big bite of the apple at 34 or 35. I know all the media is saying that the contract is going to average $60 million a year although IMO it will be slightly less but also see the bonus being at least $85 million and total guarantee being around $290 million if a 5 year deal or $240 million for a 4 year deal.

Regardless of what the years are, I suspect that Dak is the guy for at least the next 3 years so Jerry/Stephen/McClay better have a plan in place to be able to move up in the draft in 2026/2027/2028 for a top tier QB. That is unless they want to put us through another long drawn out contract negotiation with Dak in 2026/2027/2028 again. God help us!!!

“The hold up at this point from what I understand is about the years the Dallas Cowboys are willing to commit to. While, it’s assumed, that Dak is going to be paid at the top of the market, the Dallas Cowboys are aware of that. It’s... do they want to put themselves in a position, contractually, that will keep Dak in Dallas longer than two, three, four years. And that’s what Dak is looking for. He’s looking for a long-term commitment from Dallas. So the hold up here is really the belief from the Dallas Cowboys. This is a guy who’s won a lot of games. But is that enough? Winning’s not enough for Jerry Jones. We know this. They want to do more... they don’t want to just be the team that wins a lot of games. They want to be the team that can play in the Super Bowl.”

BS.

It's becoming clear that winning isn't their top priority.

If they wanted to play in the SB they would have extended Dak and Lamb earlier, creating oodles of cap space, and then using that cap space to add a few key FAs to fill clear holes.

They didn't. Because that costs money. And they simply don't spend cash like other contenders do.

My guess is that its probably the opposite. Dallas wants a longer deal while Dak is hoping for a shorter one so he can get an opportunity for one final big pay day in as he hits his mid 30s. I struggle to see how the Cowboys could make a shorter deal work for Dak if he wants $60M and has the carry over money from his existing deal to worry about. On a 3 year deal even with an added void year he would still be a top cap hit each season throughout that contract. IMO it makes sense if the Cowboys were to sign him for 5 years to spread out those hits a little more and as crazy as it sounds by 2028 $60M per year could be a bargain price for the Cowboys if they dont backload it too much.

Now this part really had me laughing. They have been non-existent in moving up to take a quarteback since........have they actually done it since Jerry's been here?

I can only dream that Jerry would move up to take Shadeur.....but he wont

Well then what else is holding up the deal
Jerry is more than likely low balling him because he wants to move on.

Jerry is probably offering 55ish mil a year knowing full well Dak wants 60+ mil a year.

This is Jerry’s way of moving on while still selling to the fans that he “tried”.

Just give him a 2 year fully guaranteed deal

Only to cave in and give him 60+ and the highest guarantee ever

It's stupid though if that is his plan.

The math just doesnt support that as being a good idea though. He has $54M in cap hits after this season that still need to be factored in. If you gave him a $2 year/ 120M deal fully guaranteed you have an $87M cap hit each year unless you add another void year, but then once again you're putting significant money into a year when he wouldnt be on the roster.

So wait last go around the issue was Dak wanted less years but they wanted more years. Now they want less years? If this is the hold up and not the money? They are gonna get this deal done.
