Seems to be several articles over last couple of days about Dak's contract. They all tend to center around the length of the contract. From what I gather, Dak wants a 4/5 year deal while Dallas wants a 2/3/4 year contract. Will this hang things up through the start of the season or will they find middle ground which would seem to be 4 years or 3 years with an option year.

It also seems that the amount (average per year) has been done and most likely the bonus money guaranteed. The structure of the contract will obviously include void years to spread out the bonus money. The question becomes the total amount which will also depend on the years.

It seems to me that a 3 or 4 year deal benefits Dak more than the Cowboys as he is 31 so it means he gets another big bite of the apple at 34 or 35. I know all the media is saying that the contract is going to average $60 million a year although IMO it will be slightly less but also see the bonus being at least $85 million and total guarantee being around $290 million if a 5 year deal or $240 million for a 4 year deal.

Regardless of what the years are, I suspect that Dak is the guy for at least the next 3 years so Jerry/Stephen/McClay better have a plan in place to be able to move up in the draft in 2026/2027/2028 for a top tier QB. That is unless they want to put us through another long drawn out contract negotiation with Dak in 2026/2027/2028 again. God help us!!!
There is no plan any team has to get a franchise QB. It is timing and luck... yea, LUCK< LUCK< LUCK. So blaming Jerry if they dont have a perfect transition from Dak to the next Tom Brady is foolish.

The math just doesnt support that as being a good idea though. He has $54M in cap hits after this season that still need to be factored in. If you gave him a $2 year/ 120M deal fully guaranteed you have an $87M cap hit each year unless you add another void year, but then once again you're putting significant money into a year when he wouldnt be on the roster.
This is why it shocks me the amount of years is the issue. I assumed Dak wanted less years…..

My guess is that its probably the opposite. Dallas wants a longer deal while Dak is hoping for a shorter one so he can get an opportunity for one final big pay day in as he hits his mid 30s. I struggle to see how the Cowboys could make a shorter deal work for Dak if he wants $60M and has the carry over money from his existing deal to worry about. On a 3 year deal even with an added void year he would still be a top cap hit each season throughout that contract. IMO it makes sense if the Cowboys were to sign him for 5 years to spread out those hits a little more and as crazy as it sounds by 2028 $60M per year could be a bargain price for the Cowboys if they dont backload it too much.
I assumed as much as well but if he did sign a 4 or 5 year deal? He’d be what? 36? If he’s playing at a high level he will still get another big deal.

No chance Dallas wants a short deal and Dak wants term. That has to be backwards.
wrong... now Dak is 31, he definitely would prefer a longer deal. At age 34 or 35 teams are far less likely to want to sign him to a free agent deal. at age 27, he wanted a short deal, at age 31, he wants a longer deal. Makes total sense.

BUT, why would Jerry want a 5 year deal at this point. If we go another 3 years and dont even reach the NFC title game, yea... Jerry would be glad to walk from Dak.

Haha its what I'm good at

I still have a sense that Dak is done in Dallas. If this story is true and Dak does want a longer deal I could be wrong and Dallas will come to their senses though.

Nah. Kirk Cousins just got paid coming off a torn achilles lol. Dak is still going to get another deal at age 35 or whatever.

Cowboys want years because it a) gives them flexibility and b) gives them value towards the end of the contract.

"Winning’s not enough for Jerry Jones. We know this. They want to do more... they don’t want to just be the team that wins a lot of games. They want to be the team that can play in the Super Bowl."

So paying a guy more than any other qb is "Lowballing?"
I would say it is given Daks situation. It depends on the metric you want to use, but $55M would actually be team friendly money for Dak given what other guys have gotten paid in comparison to the cap the year they signed. Good chance Dak's agent is comparing a cowboy offer to what would be projected to Dak next year after another bump in the cap too, which realistically could be more in the mid 60s
