This is a discussion forum– no?

No harm in doing some discussion on a player.

I do think it speaks volumes in that the Cowboys did not restructure Carr's contract this offseason. I don't think it would take a lot for the Cowboys to release him next offseason.

You may be right but that would be the case if Mitchell wasn't on the roster, if Carr doesn't perform this year the Cowboys will be in the market for another corner. If it's Mitchell then he would've proved it in the regular season.

Chances that the opening day LB corps are Durant, McClain and Carter? I'd say pretty good.

The 7th rounder- Mitchell. What are the chances he shoves Carr off the roster after this season? Unless Carr has a good season, the chances could be good.

Carr's spot has nothing to do with anyone else imho and everything to do with money.
They'll release him as soon as they can afford the cap hit.

Where the CB play may effect Carr is he could play some FS.

All that said I like everything I've seen and heard from Mitchell.

None of those three backers are Strong side guys.

If Carter is not one of the starting LBs then he will have been demoted twice, he has been beat out of the WILL spot by the journeyman Durant and is looking to get beat out of the SAM spot by DE turned LB Kyle Wilber. If he can't garner a spot in DE rotation then he is a bonafide bust.

What happened to this guy????

I don't think carter even took a snap at the strong outside linebacker spot. I think he could be better in that spot because he is probably our best linebacker taking and shedding blocks outside of lee (atleast I heard that in the practice tweets). Wonder why they don't use preseason to see how carter looks playing strong backer, durant weak, and McClain Middle.

If im not mistaking isn't durant playing middle linebacker making plays? Atleast I thought he was in at middle backer.

None of those three backers are Strong side guys.

This is what Jason Garrett is saying:

Among the players who have been impressing the Dallas coaching staff are Justin Durant at middle linebacker and Kyle Wilber, who is manning the strong side for the Dallas ones. Both men are doing their jobs well, but Rolando McClain is beginning to see more time taking MLB snaps with the Cowboys starting unit which pushes Durant over to the weakside slot. This seems to be the starting trio that the staff would love to see take the field when the Boys open the 2014 season.

Weakside linebacker Bruce Carter appears to be something of the odd man out in this situation. If the Cowboys are able to get McClain into the mix like they want, Carter will become more of a rotational and special teams guy in Dallas. This is a far cry from what was expected from him just a short year ago when he was being hailed as the next great Tampa-2 weakside linebacker. Still, according to Garrett, Carter will get his chances to prove himself.

In the Broaddus article? I didn't see it there.

Here's Broaddus' most recent comment about position:

If there was a player that needed to have a good practice or two, it was Rolando McClain. You have heard me talk time and time again about the talent I believe that McClain brings to this squad. When studying the practice, it just confirmed my belief that if he can in fact stay healthy and keep his focus on the job ahead, he can be more of a factor in trying to win this starting job away from Justin Durant. For a defense that has struggled with a physical presence at the point of attack, he is a different type of player. He has the ability to extend his arms and play with his hands. You could see this during the practice. He has an impressive ability to take on blockers and get rid of them easily. He can also be a difficult player for a running back to deal with as a blitzer. There is some dip and bend to his game along with a great deal of power.

And in another comment, the practicing of Carter on special teams is coming out now as well. He is being relegated to a role at present, and that has flex built in. With Holloman pushing him in that immediate backup position as well.

It seems like their preference might be McClain at MLB, Durant at WLB and a wide open competition at SLB.

That article is confusing. It said "Durant to Will for Wilber" but we know that Wilber has only played Sam.

There was a sentence about what about Carter and a different sentence about competition at Sam. I'm not sure if was implying Carter to Sam or not.

I'm curious if Carter was rushing from the LB spot or as a DE.

Here's Garrett's quote for all to see & decipher for themselves:

“We’ve got to give guys opportunities to play in different spots as we go through this process,” Garrett said. “If (McClain) shows us in practice and a game that he deserves to be one of them, we’re going to figure out how to do it. The position flex that Justin has to be the MIKE and also be the WILL, that’s very logical. Then you say OK, where’s Bruce (Carter)? Well, there’s competition at SAM linebacker. There are a lot of ways to do this and we’ve just got to figure out who the best three guys are and who deserves the playing time. We make those decisions as we go.”

All that Jason Garrett was stating at that occasion, was to reach the field right now, the strong side was the best possibility to earn a position. The part left out, was that he was preparing for a backup role, and not just at the Strong Side Linebacker's spot.

Thanks for the posting, although. Those are always appreciated.

that's what I would do.

mcclain has the most talent and durant the most experience.

SLB could be Carter, Wilber, Hitchens, Holleman or anyone else who can make plays without getting beat routinely.

Here's Garrett's quote for all to see & decipher for themselves:

I read that as there is ALREADY competition at SAM regardless of Carter so if McClain and Durant both need to be on the field Carter may well have lost his chance to start.
Given the rather ho hum attitude Garrett is displaying towards Carter throughout the statement that in fact maybe the case.

Carter was given a shot at SLB and couldn't cover the flats or stay with TEs. Not sure he'd get that chance again. The SLB has more man coverage duty then any other LB in this scheme.

If the CBs are covering man Carter has to cover man a lot.

Will be interesting to see if Carter gets traded late in camp.

That was a good question raised. Is the 'head shed' ready to start taking some blame now?

Whoa...Isn't Mitchell fighting for the 4th corner spot? To go from the 4th corner spot to our best corner is a big jump and a bit unfair to ask of a late round rookie.
