Whoa...Isn't Mitchell fighting for the 4th corner spot? To go from the 4th corner spot to our best corner is a big jump and a bit unfair to ask of a late round rookie.

Who said he was going to be the best corner?

All he has to be is good enough to give the Cowboys comfort in releasing Carr.

Claiborne isn't going anywhere yet.
Scandrick isn't either.

I still think the Cowboys should give Carr a 'Doug Free take it or leave it' extention.

I haven't read the other posts besides the OP so forgive me if this has been asked before, but is there a chance we can have Durant and McClain both start? I know they're both slated for MLB, but there aren't two LBers I trust more. I'm not big on the Holloman train, and I don't view Wilber as a full time starter.

Carr is our best cornerback and for the Cowboys to release him would mean they are comfortable with Scandrick who's a solid nickel corner and Claiborne who has had a injury riddled career thus far. So why would they get rid of the one guy who actually has proved he can play in this league? Because of his salary? Cowboys signed him to it and unless he becomes the worse than Mitchell I can't see them letting him go. It was easy to let Demarcus Ware go because he was actually one of the worst starters at his position. Unless Carr falls off this season.

Ware was no where near one of the worst starters at his position. And we needed a starting DE as bad as any team in football.
The Cowboys just chose not to pay huge money through his decline.
Carr is about where Ware was as far as positional rankings.
Carr has a much smaller base making it less necessary to release or restructure him tho this time next year you can bet there will be one of those two things occurring.
This team isn't eating 12m+ for Carr next season.

JT posted the response I would have.

Good points, jterrell. And both the Cowboys and Carr will have some tough choices next season. His value has decreased over the past two seasons, and at present market conditions, corners sometimes have a hard route onto their next team.

You would have been wrong too?

On what planet is Brandon Carr a better player than DeMarcus Ware?

I wouldn't have said specifically that Carr was even as good a player as Ware, but I agree that it's time (if possible) to cut the cord to Carr, and I think it will happen after this season.

I can't blame Carr for getting #1 CB money, and I CERTAINLY can't blame him for being thrown to the wolves with zero pass rush...no CBs can cover forever...that being said, I think he is a solid player and good for the team, just not at $12m for next season...there is likely a reason they didn't restructure him (besides that they didn't need the space)

After Carr got owned by Calvin Johnson he wasn't the same player last season.

Why wouldn't they eat it if he's playing up to his contract? And Demarcus Ware was terrible. I'm sorry. If anyone wants to argue how good of a career he has i'll be arguing in his favor. In his prime he was the best pass rusher in the league. But last season? He was non-existent and was outplayed by Selvie and was MIA for the last 2 months of football. I'd be hard pressed to name many guys that he was better than last season.

You can argue whatever you like but you'd be wrong. Selvie had better stats because he was single blocked by the RT while Ware faced the LT and double teams.
Ware was clearly injured at the end of the year and tailed off but even in week 17 with no right arm to use at all he still held the point of attack better than any DL on the team.
Selvie is a back up DE right now... Ware is getting paid a fortune in Denver.

The team isn't paying Carr 12+m next year because he isn't worth more than half that. With huge Dez and Tyron salaries they can't afford it even if they wanted to.

Ware was not double teamed that often. He was horrible after mid season last year. Probably because of the injuries, but he was a non-factor.

If, a big if, Claiborne and Scandrick play well and Mitchell improves, I could let Carr go. They could use the savings on an impact DE or DT.

Well first off, you misread what I stated. I was saying i'd argue in Ware's favor if anyone wants to argue how great he was in his career. But last year was his worst year as a pro and I won't defend it. I don't care if he was double teamed. Ware's been double teamed his whole career. Teams gameplanned against Ware even when he had 20 sacks.

We've been saying Ware has been "hurt" for the past 3 years as a excuse for why his play tails off towards the end of games and the end of the season.

In regards to them not paying Carr, they may not. They have options. IT isn't just cut him and rely on Scandrick, Claiborne and Mitchell. That's silly for a secondary that's already pathetic.

And yes, the Cowboys could afford to take on Carr's 12 million dollar contract.

If I had to predict i'd say they try and get him to take ta pay cut whether he takes it or not who knows. But the Cowboys can't be stupid enough to think Mitchell is ready to start for them.
