I wouldn't at all be on board with that plan for a few reasons:
1. This team isn't tanking YET.
2. If you do need a game or two handled via back up you want Weeden in there.
3. If Weeden fills in and wins a couple games all of a sudden he has trade value and reverts to the guy Holmgren loved. --btw you can bet Holmgren is part of why Weeden is here. Jerry trusts that guy on QBs.
4. If Vaughn is up it essentially starts his NFL clock and locks you into a development life cycle.

Weeden is the right price and the right age for a career back up QB. He is our new Jason Garrett.
He is never a long-term starting solution but he is an able bodied journeyman who chose to ride it out here because he likes the area.
His age isn't a big deal because he is not athletic but does have good size and arm strength things that wane slowly.
When he comes in you run the ball and let him every 3rd or 4th play as a pass.

Good points. I don't think there is necessarily a right or wrong answer. It's more about preference and playing the percentages as to what you thing is most likely to happen if Romo was out.

It would be interesting if Romo missed a game or two with a minor injury and Weeden looked really good. I could see trade value there because some team would consider his 1st round draft status and probably think that Cleveland was the problem with him.

Another interesting point on Vaughan's development cycle. If I were to keep a young guy like him, I would want him to sign a long term contract now, but I doubt if UDFAs like him are ever signed to more than 2 years.

If it comes to it I think the team should look at going with Vaughan as the backup and let him sink or swim if forced into action.

Weeden is too old to be a prospect and not really good enough to give you sufficient confidence that he'd do a whole lot better than the #3.

Interesting thought. I can see this side to it, but also can see letting Weeden have shot to play. Depending on the situation and point of the season if it comes to that.
Let Weeden play and see if he can lead the team. This still gives time to let Vaughan develop. It's not like they need to lose with Vaughan for his experience. But then again, they will know to draft a QB or not if they play him. Which I think they should draft a QB regardless of how the year turns out.

But it's not like this defense will carry the offense no matter who is at QB. not for a few years anyway, if they are lucky.

I'll surely admit to having the same thoughts cross my mind that you've mentioned here. But I do believe I'd prefer to have Vaughn brought along in more of a gradual manner to ensure his not being thrown to the wolves before he's somewhat better prepared for it.

and his draft position says this? omg, i bet all teh teams are chomping at the bit to get him from teh large sample they saw.

No, I'm not saying he's destined for stardom.

At cutdown time, teams steal from each other's PS designates; it's difficult to retain them.

And Vaughn is exactly the kind of young #3 QB that you want on your PS.

If the Cowboys already have their eyes on a handful of others that will likely go through the waived-to-PS process, then they might not be bothered at all if they lose him.

This bugs me a bit every year, as I know the drill, but the pet hound in question gets collared by someone else and ends up thriving in their system.

IN a way i have to disagree with some of this, and heres my take.

1 I believe this team will decide to tank the season if they dont get rid of Matt Johnson or try to keep players that just arent going to help at this point. Time to unload certain guys that you know are not goign to make it not only on this roster but any roster. Some guys are just going to be jags, no matter how hard we hype it up.

2. We wont have ROmo missing just a game here or there, when Romo gets hurt, its more time than we care to want. Weeden is not goign to handle that. Weeden is like other delusional people, hes going to tell you he can do, reality is going to show you another picture.

3. Weeden is not what we need, what we need is a young guy whos going to accept hes a back up but might see valuable time. Not a game here or there until our next franchise guy is in place.

4 if Vaughn is that guy and i dont believe he is, than you play him now, you drop Weeden and dont waste time. WE cant carry 3 qbs, im saying this now, if Weeden goes to walmart dont buy the industrail sized shampoo he should not be around long enough to see its use here.

Whos system did mat moores thrive in? IS Danny Amendola really thriving? Where are these players.

No, Vaughn is the type of player you start as back up right now. Putting him on the PS is a risk and if someone really feels he can be a good back up, Get him in there now and work him in, dont let him sit.

This, except I would keep Weeden as the primary backup; he's a better prospect if Tony goes down for just a game or two.

Tony's back will never be 100% healthy so keeping a 3rd QB prospect (that they may actually like) on the roster would only be prudent. That is unless they have already decided to tank if Tony does goes down for an extended period.

Better prospect for what?

There's been plenty of discussion about how Romo's bagged by a weak defense.

If Romo can't overcome the defense, Brandon Weeden damned sure can't.

If Romo goes down, the team needs to see if there's something in Vaughan worth developing. If not, they'll be primed to get a top quality QB prospect.

I'll be the first to say it......this back up we have.. Ronald Patrick is playing some pretty decent ball @ C. If I had to pick one between Bernie and RP @ C.. it would be really close. I think RP has outplayed Bernie @ C.....but Bernie's versatility might save him because he can play C/G

Patrick needs work on his shotgun snaps - he doesn't put enough mustard on them. They look like eephus pitches going to the quarterback.
