Why do you choose to ignore the games the defense played well? There weren't a lot, but they are there.

Ok, I went and revisited the games from last year. There were a few. I guess since we were sooo bad in others, I overlooked the decent ones we actually were ok in. You got me there

Ha I can only imagine. In fact, now that I think about it, it's probably a good thing that they spread the draft out over several days. I'm not sure some of the posters on here could've handled watching us pass on Manziel, give up our 3rd to trade up, and then draft Hitchens in the 4th all in quick succession. It would've been insanity.

Or heart attack inducing...which might not be a bad thing...

I am going to trust Will on this one. With Lee you need a good back up. The guy was productive at a big school. I think he will turn out ok.

No one said a 4th round pick should be an immediate starter. But when you pick at 119 the guy who is the 250th rated player and then state he will be a backup it is a bad pick. Telvin Smith was sitting there and I would be happy to wager he will be a starter if not this season by next season. You must have loved the 09 backup draft.

The guy was drafted in the 5th round, obviously the NFL disagrees with you.

But but but my draft guide says he is ranked as a 7th rounder.

He makes plays, and played defense for a Big 10 school that has put several dependable defensive players into the NFL.

It was not just your draft guide but everyone's draft guide that had Hitchens nowhere near the 4th round. Hitchens is likely going to be a very good backup and ST player but the expectation for a 4th rounder is a guy who will challenge for a starting spot. In either case, Hitchens was overdrafted, not a value pick. I hope I am proven wrong but IMO there were UDFA LBs (e.g. Carlos Fields, Jack Doughty, Alvin Scioneaux, etc.) that will end up being better or just as good at pro level.

Hitchens is a potential starter.

Just because Jerry can't be quiet doesn't change that. They think he can compete on the outside and I expect him to do so. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he does end up starting some this season.

I guarantee you that Jerry was looking at the fact that Hitchens can back up Lee in case of injury as an added bonus. He doesn't think like the rest of us, that should be evident in the way he talks. It is sometimes hard to make heads or tails out of what he's saying.

Now suddenly, what he says is the gospel?

Hitchens was rated by more than just Dallas as a mid-round player. They wanted toughness added to the defense and he adds it. They needed more LB's badly, and they took one.

So nobody would have had a problem with T Smith... because he was talked about by the draft experts as a 3rd round pick. Well, they were wrong about how NFL teams valued him, just like they were wrong about how Hitchens was valued.

Smith wouldn't have added the toughness that Dallas was searching for and Hitchens does.

The bottom line is: If Hitchens plays well enough to start this year, he will. There is no limit set on him. Frankly, with the competition he has outside, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him starting in 2014.

Jeez. And I can't believe they used that 5th on a 3rd backup receiver too. I mean he's not even a starter. If a valueable 5th rounder can't beat out Dez for a starting job why bother drafting him?

I think you're giving too much credit to the draft media. There are inevitably going to be some players that NFL teams rate higher/lower than where they are rated by the draft media. The draft media spends about 90% of their effort on the top 100 players. The media's analysis of later round players is sketchy. Look at how far off the draft media was with guys like Jeffcoat.

This pick seems to be another "Matt Johnson", "Kyle Wilber", "David Arkin", "AOA", "Stephen McGee", "Victor Butler", "Brandon Williams", "Tashard Choice" selection..

Ding Ding Ding. Number one answer on the board

It's a wrong answer since many of those players were rated to go in that area by the media. What they do have in common is that 4th round picks have a high percentage of failure.

Which was the point I was trying to make. 4th rounders are a crap shoot despite many here's perception.
