We've missed a lot in rounds 1-7. And when we have really hit, usually its been the 1st round, and sorry but thats the most given round in the nfl.

Franchise QB: undrafted free agent
starting WR: undrafted free agent
starting WR: #1 pick ( trade )
starting RB: 4th round pick
starting FB: undrafted free agent
starting TE: 3rd round pick

RT: free agent signee
RG: free agent signee
C: 2nd round pick
LG: free agent signee
LT: 4th round pick

........

RDE: free agent signee
NG: 7th round pick
LDE: 1st round pick

OLB: 1st round pick
ILB: 4th round pick
ILB: free agent signee
OLB: 1st round pick

LCB: 1st round pick
SS: free agent signee
FS: 6th round pick
RCB: 1st round pick.

22 starters: SIX 1st round picks, FIVE free agents signees, THREE undrafted free agents, THREE 4th round picks, ONE 2nd, 6th, and 7th round picks.

and take a look at the rest of the roster which is full of draft picks as well.

Classic case of people hearing what they want to hear.

I didn't say the scouting department hasn't picked players who are on our team or other teams.

All the players you named are jags, except for maybe our punter... who is actually by default a jag.

yeah hostile that is EXACTLY what im saying... /sarcasm.

Randy White. Other teams hit else where, but yes compare the savings of just 3 players... what teams were over the cap last year? None. Were you trying to make a point?

THREE undrafted free agents, THREE 4th round picks, ONE 2nd, 6th, and 7th round picks.

This is what we're looking at. 1 player in the 2nd round. 50% coming from the first round in the draft our free agency. And look at your free safety, inside linebacker.

You're giving Marion the nod as the starter too... which is misleading. And you've also given the fullback the starting nod over martellus bennett (2nd rd) and Dez Bryant (1st). Just to fill your agenda...

Dude, what everybody is saying is that the draft is a crapshoot. Did you look at the list of players the Pats have drafted over the past 3-4 drafts???

How many probowlers jumped off the screen for you???

See my point. The fact that Aikman said that it is regarded around the league that Dallas has one of the most talented rosters should put your mind at ease concerning our scouting department.

Trust me, the talent level of this team is not the problem....COACHING IS!!!

One Beast dropping truth on another Beast.

Great post.

Yea, one that you're obviously missing:

Resources ( draft picks and money ) SAVED in looking for a franchise QB, Pro Bowl NG and Pro Bowl WR are resources they have been able to use elsewhere to make the roster as talented as it is right now.

Take a look at what those other teams have had to pay to fill those same positions through the draft and NONE of those players are nearly as good as the one the Cowboys have.

As previously noted, this team isn't lacking in talent. On an overall basis (drafting, Free Agents, UDFA), this scouting department does as good a job as any team in the league. But there are three areas of improvement that I would like to see.

First, improve consistency. We should never completely whiff on a draft class (ala 2006). There should be at least 1-2 significant contributors from any draft class.

Second, improve our drafting in the second round. We should be getting players in the second round that are starting within 1-2 years. But if I'm not mistaken, I don't believe we have any players starting that were drafted in the second round.

Third, we need to do a better scouting and selecting offensive lineman. I think part of the problem here had been that Dallas can't decide whether it wants the big road grader or mobile, athletic type of OL. They should develop a template for what they want and stick with it.

Every team misses on late round picks and UDFAs.

Honestly...smh.

The Ravens and Ozzie Newsome do a pretty good job of stocking their defense with late round draft picks....

I would like to hear all about Arthur Jones, Jason Phillips, Haruki Nakamura, Prescott Burgess, Derrick Martin, Ryan Lacasse, and Mike Smith.

Those are Defensive players drafted from 5th round to 7th round since 2005 when we drafted Jay Ratliff in the 7th. Just so you know, none of those guys are starters like Ratliff is and many of them are gone. I personally will take Ratliff over all of their guys put together. Heck, I'd take Scandrick over most of them. We even have a starter in Alan Ball. Now you can complain that he isn't any good, and I may agree. But starters are better than backups for evaluation of this stuff.

I am an Ozzie Newsome fan, but let's not go overboard here.

What has hurt us really is missing on almost all of our 2nd and 3rd rd picks over the last 6 years. Now getting Romo, the Rat, Austin as UDFA's or very late rd picks has helped but where missing on those rd picks have hurt us is the O line. With Jerruh pretty much unwilling to ever draft one in the first, a lot of our picks have come rds 2-4 and we have missed several picks there. It seems more like luck than anything else that Free has come through for ut. He is the first drafted O line player to become a starter since 2002, if you leave out Al Johnson who was fairly good. Free is the first one to look like he can really be good at either LT or RT.

Well the mistake you made here is that they actually don't take a lot of defensive guys with late picks. They actually tend to spend those picks on skill players.

My biggest problem with our drafting is Jerry getting cute with the picks thinking he is smarer than the rest. The quarterback Isaiah in the 4th round to be a WR, Most of the 2009 draft(we had 12 picks and he wouldn't trade up to get who he wanted-Max Urger). Stop taking projects and make solid picks. Start drafting lineman earlier.

I agree. I was happy with the approach we took last draft.

If you want a guy, then go get him. I'd rather have 4 good picks in a draft than 10 average players.

Especially in an age when everyone kept saying there were no open spots in the starting roster. Why wouldn't you then go for quality over quantity?

Those saying the Draft is a "crapshoot" are over simplifying it a bit. Yes, you can never tell if a kid is gonna lose heart and persue the ministry ala Glen Coffee, or die in a shooting (Daurant Williams)...you get the point.

However, player evaluation is a skill and some are better at it than others. Some scouting departments are much better in their approach, analysis, and evaluation processes than others.

I just love these assinine remrks. Jerry thinking he's smarter than the rest? Do you even know WTH you're trying to say?

I wanted to see us get Unger as well. You just don't have enough info to say a mistake was made there.

burmafrd is saying exactly what im saying.

hitting on romo and the others mentioned doesn't excuse the numerous misses we've had.

smh..

Are you serious?

Show me a team that drafts consistent starters with more than 75% of their picks. PLEASE. I'll call Jerry Jones and tell him to start picking up that teams cuts every year because apparently they'll have so much talent that they are dumping Pro Bowlers.

Great. Guess you should make another complaint thread then.

Yes i do. If u really want that player, make sure u get him. He had the draft picks to move up and get him but he got cute and waited. Is that simple enough?
