With Bass, I think this article backs up the assertion that he could be good for us on the DL next season:

"You've got to make him good first." -- Rod Marinelli

If he isn't good yet, what use is he right now?

Lets be honest with ourselves for once.....if somehow things were changed and an Eagles/Commanders fan was telling you how Jeff Heath, Ben Bass, Nick Hayden, and George Selvie were going to be key parts of their defensive turnaround you would laugh directly in their face and call them an idiot. Just because a player is on your favorite team it doesn't automatically make them good and a lot of people here seem to struggle with that. And you can add the likes of Kyle Wilber and Davonte Holloman to that list.

Selvie finished with 39 tackles and seven sacks for the season. He also had seven tackles for loss, 22 quarterback pressures, two pass deflections, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Those numbers should improve with him playing in his contract year. I've got Ward being the savior at FS so don't take my comments about Heath's potential as me saying he is the answer there next season. And I don't prefer Hayden at 1 tech like I said, so I'm giving some options there as the roster stands right now. With Wilber, Barr would replace him as starter.

So the two players I mentioned getting with our first two picks, Barr and Ward, would be nice upgrades. Is the defense capable of having a turn-around with such additions and a more healthy year? I think so. If that's because I'm a fan of the team and see the potential, then guilty as charged. I don't follow the team looking for reasons to feel gloom and doom about our chances.

He's referring to moving him over to DE when necessary. You don't want to throw a bunch of things to do and think about at him right away.

He is more fitted for DT though.

I think he could develop into a rotational tackle, but this team still needs two starters and a reserve guy ahead of him. Let him compete with Nick Hayden for that fourth tackle spot.

You must have had your eyes closed while following this team for the past 15+ years then....theres no need to look for reasons to feel bad about the team, they jump out and smack you in the face. You can think I'm being negative all you want, but lying to yourself and sugar coating the marginal talent thats on this defense isn't being any more productive.

I like Justin Ellis DT (1 tech) in the 4th. He's rated just a few spots below our pick there on this list.

Some of you seem ready to write off next year and carry a hopeless attitude about it all. I think that's closing your eyes to what could go right instead of go wrong. If things fall apart again, injuries, etc. I'll be gloomy then for sure. But if the cards we have are played well, there is a chance for success. If you lump all past Cowboy failures into one basket, that's neglecting the personnel changes and new elements to this pursuit of another Super Bowl.

I'm sorry. I'm sure you're a good dude and all. I just refuse to have a serious discussion about Ben Bass and Jeff Heath.

Nick Hayden too.

There has to be a line somewhere and this is it for me.

Fair enough, but keep in mind I don't have these guys pegged as starters, they are just pieces to the puzzle of a 53 man roster. My "most underrated guys on the team" comment was probably taken the wrong way. I just think these guys have a chance to be good. The real point was that a good draft that addresses the defense ( but misses on a starting 3 tech DT) would prompt me to hope we keep Hatcher, as I don't think it has to take long to turn the defense around. We know special teams and offense are solid, so why can't the Cowboys be a solid team next season with a good draft?

Its my dream that 0 out of Bass, Hayden, and Heath make the 53 man roster. Of course it won't happen, but 1 can dream right?

And I can assure you signing another d lineman on the wrong side of 30 to an expensive long term deal isn't the answer to our problems.

Two of the most underrated guys on the roster. You heard it here first. But even if they don't play up to their raw skills, they are depth at FS and 1 tech. Heath is very good on special teams. Ward should be a starter at FS, and while I don't prefer Hayden, he can get the job done at 1 tech and then you could swing Crawford to the 1 tech in the nickel, putting Ware, Selvie, Crawford and Hatcher as the pass rush. That's not bad, man.
They don't really play a 1-tech in the nickel. Both DTs are usually lined up more as 3-techs with a big gap in the middle of the line.
