As I've been digesting the various takes and commentary in Dallas, some of which has been from some pretty "inside" people, it's become pretty clear what Dallas is going to attempt to be next year.
We've heard over and over about the Tampa 2. And several references were made early after the draft about the Patriots two-tight-end offense with Gronkowski and Hernandez. There'll likely be no fullback on the team next year, we're told.
So Monte's old Tampa 2 defense and the current New England offense, right?
Nope. I don't think that's the plan.
Think more like Seattle defense and New Orleans offense. That's what they have in mind.
Monte Kiffin has his defense watching hours and hours of tape on the Seattle Seahawks. It's a different style of the Tampa 2, built on more physicality and aggressiveness up front and on the corners. Not sure how that works with our smaller, quicker lineman, but somehow he's trying to incorporate that approach with our personnel.
Gavin Escobar was drafted to be Jimmy Graham. Tall, rangy tight end with great hands that you can throw it up to in the red zone or over the seam against safeties. More dynamic wideouts with Dez, Austin, and Williams than what the Patriots have. Much more like the Saints. Run the ball effectively like Ingram and Ivory (Murray and Randle), and let Romo play the Brees role as a smallish QB that get the ball downfield.
So will it work?
Sure, Kiffin knows that he has better starting linebackers than Seattle and not nearly as big and physical defensive linemen as the Seahawks. He'll plan accordingly, but I still find it interesting how he refers to Seattle so much, as do his players these days.
Kiffin wants some morph of the defense he designed with how it's being employed by Pete Carroll's defensive staff.
And if Jerry can't hire Sean Payton, perhaps he wants Garrett to run his offense like him. They've worked together before, so maybe with the right personnel, Garrett can do just that I actually think Romo would be very successful with the Saints, and he's a lot like Brees in some ways. The receiveing corps and backs are VERY similar, though the offensive line not so much.
Those are the comparatives next year. Can we mimic both well enough? We'll see.
