This could potentially kill the Pats, IMHO. I mean, who in their right mind would want to go to N.E. now, knowing they aren't going to get the money they are looking for. Even the players there now, I bet are having second thoughts about staying. If Belechik (sp) gets the Pats in the playoffs this year, I'd be shocked.

Exactly, the Patriots are emulating the Arizona Cardinals philosophy in that they want to win and save money at the same time. In professional sports, those two philosophies don't go hand in hand. Granted, you don't neet to be Dan Snyder but you can't win if you are so cheap that you won't attempt to resign quality veterans who have helped you in the past. It seems like they are letting everyone go. That team is clearly in decline. If I was Tom Brady, I would be very upset.

My point was that the Cowboy way is not the only way. Yes, they have put together a young, strong defense; but how many playoff games have they won in the past 10 years?

You know who else has done a good job of acquiring talent over the past several years? The Seahawks - who just dealt for Branch. Perhaps their GM knows how to build a championship team!

There have been only two times that I felt that the Pats made a bad move relative to the staff.

First, major, big time major was the loss of Curtis Martin. The guy was making only $350,000 a year. The Pats should have approached him with a contract, he would have stayed. Darn, we did not have a good RB almost for 10 years when he went to the Jets. Darn, dumb move, just flat out dumb Pats.

The situation with Branch is not so clear cut. He is no TO. But he wanted that kind of money. Tough. Real tough. If you give it to him what about the other guys??? But still, if he was approached sooner, he would be with the Pats.

It is important because Brady now has to throw to less than the best -- boy is that the understatement of the year.

So, at least we have a new good RB, and Dillion. Will that be enough if the young WR take off. Maybe. But it must burn Brady's butt to think that he has nobody, nobody with talent to throw to. Tough.

Brady, hang in there. Branch, well you got what you wanted, money.

What more is there to say??????

Unless Seattle wins the Super Bowl this year it wasnt worth giving up a first round pick.

Branch is not as good as other guys comparable to him, Santana Moss and Steve Smith just to name a few. Sure his numbers in New England were tainted because they run that offense where they have everyone involved and no true number one WR. But if you think in terms of trades you see the Dolphins get a former MVP Quaterback candidate for a 2ND ROUND PICK! Which is a much better move, dont care if the guy is hurt or not. But then you see the Seahawks give up a 1st round pick for a WR who has never posted up 1000 yards seasons like someone mentioned but beyond that is not a gamebreaker or gamechanging WR.

Not to mention next years draft will be loaded with awesome wide receivers! who have unlimited potential unlike Branch. So again it all comes down to whether Seattle wins it all or not.

I said mortgage PART of their future. They just signed him to a $39 million dollar contract AND gave up a 1st round draft choice to a guy who has never had 1,000 yards or scored more than 5 TDs.

Did you read his contract. $23 million in the first 3 years. TO easily a top 3 receiver in the league got paid $25 million over 3 years. Branch got 92% of TO's contract. You think TO is only 8% better than Branch?

WOW, $39 million and a 1st round draft choice. That is a MAJOR payment on the side of Seattle. Overall far more than Dallas paid for TO.

not sure much of that matters...what matters is Seattle is a heckuva lot closer to winning a SB than we are so if Branch pans out for them, it will be well worth their first round pick, which is destined to be a very low pick anyway.
Funny, Seattle finally figured out what I knew early last year...their WR corps stinks and was the only reason, other than horrid officiating, that they lost the SB last season.
By comparison, we need a lot more than TO to win. Point is, if you think there is only one piece left to complete the SB puzzle...what price is too high?

Comparing Branch's contract to TO's is laughable. TO didn't get as much money as he could have because of his issues. Branch has had no issues, other than a holdout, when he was making $450,000 a year and was a Super Bowl MVP.

There are a lot of WRs that make this kind of money. Javon Walker, just coming off an ACL injury signed a $40 million deal, including $25 million in the first 3 years. These guys are younger, and their teams are making investments for the future. Seattle wasn't going to get a Deion Branch with their 1st round pick next year.

You really shouldn't put too much stock in player salaries. Some teams *cough* Commanders *cough* will overpay free agents. Are you saying Brandon Lloyd, Antwaan Randle El, and Adam Archuleta should be considered the best at their respective positions?

Hey guys, just a little comparison here. Look at these two players, we'll call them player X and player Y.

----------------------------------

Player X was drafted in 2002. His career numbers are:

195 catches
2791 yards
23 touchdowns

Player Y was also drafted in 2002. His career numbers are:

213 catches
2744 yards
14 touchdowns

-----------------------------------

Player X was acquired for a 4th round draft pick and at a quite affordable salary.

Player Y was acquired for a 1st round pick and at a ludicrous salary for his career numbers.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, X is Donte Stallworth and Y is Deion Branch.

Guys, Branch really isn't all that great. He's good, but the Seahawks bent over and took it with this deal. The Seahawks vastly overpaid for this guy, especially considering New England had ZERO bargaining power and considering what Philly gave up for Stallworth.

Glad to see him signed and it looks like the Seahawks have big plans for him.

I picked him in the 15th round for my Fantasy Team. Can you say value? :D

My point remains that the Commanders way is not working. The Seahawks are not emulating the Commanders by making this trade. That is plain and simple B & G myopic crap.

One thing I worry about it is you see all the time these skill position plays miss all of camp or most of it and then immediately pull a hammy or some other muscle and then it takes them most if not all of the season to get their burst back. It wouldn't surprise me to see this happen to Branch.
