Sean Lee may never be the player we want him to be

He's another Bob Sanders. Great, and I mean great, when he's on the field. He's a one of a kind player, but sadly, his body is not for the NFL. He would make a great linebacker coach though.

Bob Sanders was one of the most overrated players in league history. His play when healthy wasn't as great as it was made out to be. For a playmaker, he lacked a lot of big plays. He had 6 career interceptions. Sean Lee has 11 interceptions in his career.

If Sean Lee can come back and be part of the line backing corp, then I think that will be a good thing for Dallas. At this point he may not be who we want him to be, but he can be helpful when healthy.

I fear Lee may be another Jimmy Smith. The Cowboys may tire of his injuries and cut him, only to see him become a great star for another team.

Agreed, no way in hell McClain gets out of Dallas. He's happy, reportedly loves it here and his career has been resurrected. No way Jerry does not give him a contract and lock him up.

One of the best LBers I've ever seen. One of the most fragile guys as well. Not a good combo.

If he can't ever stay healthy then obviously no he's not going to be what we wanted him to be.

Unfortunately some players just have terrible luck with that stuff. I'm not sure what he's supposed to have done to avoid getting a torn ACL or to keep his hand from breaking, or any of that stuff.

It's why I laugh at all these people who think that things like that are preventable. The most accomplished athletes in the world get hurt and can't avoid injures. It's entirely luck.

I don't think anyone should be counting on Sean Lee. Would love him to make a comeback and team with McClain. But I have serious doubts he'll ever suit up an entire season with the Cowboys. :(

I agree. Money really wasn't the issue with McClain; otherwise, he would have never quit the first time. I think he's one of those players who supports loyalty. Jerry Jones believed in him, and I think McClain will reward that belief by staying with the Cowboys, regardless what the market dictates. However, I think Jerry will reward him for "sticking with it" and elevating the Cowboys defense into a dynamic unit.

C'mon! He's torn a couple ACL's and his big piggy was hurt, it's not exactly like his body is breaking down because of contact. Freak injuries. You know who does the best job at recovering from freak injuries? Guys who are obsessed with football, live and breathe the game, and go into rehab with that same single-minded intensity. You know who loves football more than anyone in the universe? Sean Lee.

C'mon guys, Sean Lee is going to return 100% and be a one-man wrecking crew. He will take this defense to an elite level.

He's had a different injury every single year that he has been here. The season he played 15 games, yeah, he had a club for an arm due to an injury. Also, let's not downplay his ACL injuries, it's kinda a big deal.

And I'm sure he will come back 100%, just to be injured in the third or fourth game (If he even makes it through TC).

As of now, history suggests he won't last in the NFL.

I was looking at his injury history because I thought, it's not like Sean Lee has recurring injuries, but the fact is the guy is just made out of glass. Everything breaks on him.

In 5 years, he will have missed 34 games... That is mind boggling. 34/80 games missed...

Many will probably posit that we shouldn't have paid him. I would respond that we really haven't paid him yet.

He got a 10 million dollar signing bonus, and his base salary for this year was 750k and a restructure proration of 950k.

Over the next two years Sean Lee will have to prove that he can stay healthy. And in the mean time, his base salaries are very affordable. In 2017, the dead money to cut him outright would be about 4 million. 3 million in 2017 and 1 million in 2018 if cut in June.

Basically what this contract means is that we've taken an insurance policy out on Lee. We could even keep him in 2017 by restructuring between 2017 and and 2018, which would bring his cap hit to about 5 million, leaving the cost to cut him in 2018 at 3 million. Lee has already cost himself a great deal in bonuses.

The reality is this guy is a game changer when healthy, and if he can ever get to a point where he can remain healthy, he will help transform this defense into an elite squad.

The potential of having Lee and McClain on the field together would be amazing.

Wow, had no idea you were a physician. Can you look at my big toe. I think it's gout.

The weekly negative Nancy Galian post. Could set my watch to these.

im not so sure his cerebral style is a good chemistry fit with mcclain.

Two things.

Exactly what leads you to believe this revelation you posted about the melding of minds?

I don't know about Bob Sanders other than he won DPOY in 2007. Seems to me he did something right to be named the best defensive player in the entire NFL.

I think having a strong offensive line that can keep the defense off the field will benefit Lee in the future

I had to change the avi as soon as someone sent me that classic picture of the playmaker and emmitt with the old school Dallas skyline in the background. Just classic.

I went into a little more detail in my following post below. I think they have two different leadership styles and approaches to preparation. I wonder how that will end up working itself out. Guys like Carter and Durant (both care-free guys similar to Ro) seem to play better under Ro.

Fletch, I agree with you. Trust in Marinelli is a good approach to have.

I should have been a little more clear in my original thought. From all accounts, Sean Lee seems to be a 10-12 hr type of guy, he's always at Valley Ranch preparing. McClain seems to be the opposite. McClain is not a fan of Mon-Fri. but loves gameday. I'm just a little interested to see how that dynamic between two different personalities/approaches/leadership styles is going to work out. I always found it strange how Carter seemed to always play better when Lee is out. I love Lee and his approach but I don't see him being the leader of this defense anymore after this season. I think McClain has taken over and I think his approach is preferred by his teammates. Frankly, the defense seems to be enjoying themselves a lot more under McClain's leadership.

lee is signed cheaper than carter will be. lee is a great player when healthy. lee will be back next year playinng outside with RO inside. carter is the guy i think will walk because i think he will get some nice offers and we can't have 3 lb's making second contract money unless it's below market value. with hitch and i think we can resign durant along with wilbur we will be set at lb and use the money we save by not signing carter to either keep melton or sign someone else. don't see that much money being spent on just lb's

But the team is in nice position where they also have durant, if carter walks so be it let that new team try and get something good out of him in the new scheme. Move Durant to SLB, maybe not quite the upside as Carter but very serviceable.
