I like this guys attitude and he is easy to root for but I have still yet to see anything that makes me say "wow".

I know there is a lot of people with credentials who think he has great ability but from the very little I have seen there has been nothing that makes me think he will be more than average.

I admit though I don't watch a lot of Big 10 football, especially Penn State, because it bores the heck out of me.

I don't think he'll ever be that "wow" player, just because of the position he plays.

Look at Brooking himself... Great player, but aside from his intensity and leadership, he doesn't do anything spectacular on the field. And he was a, what, top 12 pick?

See I disagree.

Brooking was highly noticeable at a position Akin Ayodele and Zach Thomas were not.

He dwindled away in a few games but there were games he was all over the place displaying his quickness.

I wouldn't expect 'wow' from a 3-4 ILB, much like I don't expect 'wow' from a 3-4 DE, especially in our scheme.

Just be solid in your role and don't give up the big play.

And I think we'll get that from a player like Lee.

I think he's going to turn out to be a great pick and an upgrade over Carpenter as a rookie.

Something the Cowboys saw on film made them say "this guy is a top 15 player."

You watch a guy like Rolando McClain and it doesn't take 20 seconds for his physical abilities to jump out at you.

I admit I haven't seen the guy play a lot but nothing has jumped out at me other than his mental perspective of the game.

He was far better than they were, but he still didn't make a lot of highlight-type plays. ILBs are never going to, unless they get a lot of INTs or something.

I think that was consistancy, intelligence, and work ethic more than a 'wow' factor.

Honest question. Was McClain playing ILB in a 3-4 this past year?

I don't think he'll ever be 'flashy', just a solid, dependable contributor who does his job and is one of 11 spots on defense that you don't have to worry about.

I'm hoping for a Donnie Edwards-type player.

See I think all of those things are great but those things alone won't get you into the top 15 of a teams draft board.

There has to be something they were impressed with physically.

all the physical tools you need with the mental make up to matter.

It's not physical that matters, all these guys can play, it's character, work ethic, and leadership that make him a top 15.

you won't see it on film, you aren't looking for the right things.

Well he sheds blocks, holds the point of attack, changes directions well, has a bit of burst going upfield, wraps up well when tackling and doesn't get fooled.

That makes me say wow especially after Carpenter in the run game.

First of all, Lee is not comparable at this point to Rolando McClain. Could he be one day? That remains to be seen. Rolando McClain is a Ray Lewis. Lee is a Keith Brooking. Lewis and Brooking are not comparable really.

Some guys are spectacular. Some are steady. The second describes Sean Lee. This is a guy who is absolutely driven to come out on top. While athletic, he is not the physical freak kind of athlete that say a Patrick Willis is. He's not the huge bull that a Brian Urlacher is. He will make reads at incredible speed because he lives the game.

What he is mostly, is a pure football player. Someone who hates to lose. Someone to whom the idea of getting beat is so abhorrent that he pushes himself to fanatical levels. He is an Emmitt Smith at LB instead of a Barry Sanders. Someone who plays with heart. It cannot be measured.

ILBs and MLBs rarely are glamour positions. There are obviously exceptions to this. Often though what you find is a guy who while not exactly get out of your chair great, is simply a catalyst for the entire team. Keith Brooking is the immediate example I think of. Guys will feed off of Sean Lee the same way they feed off of Brooking. He is a natural. It is rare.

Had he not had the knee injury in 2008 this guy was a top 15 player. In 2008 when he got hurt he immediately injected himself into coaching Penn State football as a student. In 2009 he got hurt. If not for that injury he was still a 1st round pick.

Joe Paterno knows a thing or two about LBs. He compares Lee to Jack Ham. Now if you watch the Steelers in their heyday you undoubtedly saw the absolute aggression of Jack Lambert. Ham may very well have been the better overall football player. The guy flat out was always there for big games, little games, and in between games.

I'll take that.

Word.

Leadership.

Barring injury, Lee will be a team leader in three years. It's not something you will always be able to see on the stat line or the highlight video.

he was noticeable because of the brand of football he plays...alot of yelling and arms flailing and just high intensity (which this defense desperately needed) but brookings numbers were actual barely above average at his position when compared to league. I didnt see Brookings making "wow" plays but rather steady and consistantly being in right place.

As for lee....you wont see alot of wow plays....he just one of the most instinctive guys you will see play that position which is exactly what you want from "Mo" position. Let Dez make the "wow" plays.

In 2005, he had 115 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 4 INTs.

In 2004, he had 102 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 3 INTs.

In 2001, he had 127 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 2 INTs.

LOVE this post.

Rolando McClain is a Ray Lewis

say what Hos ?????????????????

This remains to be seen.

a little early to be calling that IMO

McClain Strong In Gaps, Not Coverage: Here is a toss up. It is great that McClain can get into running lanes and stall RBs. But when McClain is matched up with a RB on a passing play, he is slow and falls behind. The Raiders play a lot of man coverage so McClain will need to step up

Well there you go. You're looking for the spectacular. The 'wow'. Too many people today become so much more enamored by what "looks good" versus what works. I'm a Big 10 guy, and I'll admit it's boring compared to other conferences, but that doesn't make it any less effective. They still win a lot of bowl games, and put a lot of players in the NFL. You can find all sorts of players that make you say 'wow' at the college level that just aren't fit for the pros.

Sean Lee isn't spectacular, he just gets the job done, time in time out. He's a natural leader. He'll play till his legs fall off. He's rarely, if ever, out of position. Compare him with Jason Williams. You look at his highlight reel coming out of college, and the guy looks like a freak. The only problem is, he's struggling to figure out how to play at the next level. I know he's changing positions and all, and once he figures it out, he could very well turn out to be a beast. But with Sean Lee, you won't have to worry about that. He just makes plays, consistently. He doesn't knock your socks off. He just gives you what you need.

Catch17, despite my sig...I understand what you are saying. I wasn't that impressed either with the video footage. But you know what? The fact that the Cowboy scouts had him rated in the top 20 of the whole draft tells me more than the footage. And the fact that Wade seems to be a true believer tells me even more.

I agree. Everyone is saying the right things about him and people are saying he has ability and everything.

But I like to form my own opinion and so far im just not overly impressed based on the very little I have seen.

Hopefully in Pre-season some of these things that everyone talks about start to show up.

I just feel like you have to be a complete BA to be rated as a top 15 player in a draft as a MLB.
