Who knows exactly how this will play out. We certainly all wish the best for Smith and the Cowboys.

The issue is opportunity cost. High 2nd rounder could have yielded a very talented player for the Cowboys while Smith is sidelined for a year and may or may not play again....and not sure if 100% back to his old self when he recovers.

This is also a 4-12 team last year. We are what we are. We got plenty of holes to fill. If we were better then a luxury pick like this is fine. But we are not.

Trying to "outsmart" other teams is exactly what got us to this perennially .500 status. The Ravens, Pitts of the world have "boring" drafts but their players pans out. And as Sturm has shown on his article that our draft record after the 1st round has not been good (we knew that already).

Granted a 2nd round pick could have garnered a good player. Could have also garnered a Bruce Carter... You simply do not know.

Yep, .500 has been the reality. But also this 4th pick in the first round was the highest Dallas has chosen in 26 years, meaning there hasn't been one of those god-awful suck seasons before this.

It's not about taking chances it's about which chances to take.

Doctors are like professional economists. They all have educated opinions about the future and 99% of them are wrong each year. Usually,
1 out of a 100 will get it right but, the one that gets it right this year will most likely get it wrong next year.

99% of them are wrong. Really!

for the love of god, please show me a source on 99% of doctors being incorrect.

Man, Sean Spence's injury was gruesome, I was watching that game. He hasnt been the same since. He was lightning fast and the Steelers looked like they had another huge LB find. But, he did make it back.

I think he just signed somewhere, Tennessee, so Dick Lebeau still thinks he can play a little.

He wasn't drafted to play at all in 2016, not even December or the playoffs. He may recover and be able to practice, but currently they are just holding out a carrot of hope for the guy to help him with his recovery work. They aren't really hoping to have him for the playoffs as a rookie. He will likely be on the PUP list for the first 6 games, and then go on IR. I, too, expect him to be a difference maker in 2017.

There's a reason most knee surgeries were done by the Dr in Charlottesville for years, and there's a reason this Dr. did the knee surgery in this case. The opinion of a Dr who has done the most of these procedures and watched every situation for how things heal is very likely the guy who knows best and isn't guessing by what he's read in a journal.

It looks like he was back from the injury on October 2013, and "looked phenomenal". That would be 13.5 months.
He then broke his finger.

They can probably predict 100% of the time that you are going to die - someday.
Can they predict you are going to die next week at 9:32am, uh no!

They can probably predict that Jaylon is going to recover and lead a pretty good life but,
can they predict that he's going to be just as good as new, uh probably not.

It just depends on what the prediction is?

Yeah, a broken finger sidelines you for a year in the NFL. Right....

The knee of a second round raft pick. Has there ever been a more discussed knee in the history of the NFL? And it is only one week removed from the draft.

Nothing more to do now than just wait and see.

Maybe? I haven't checked out the Jags boards, but I bet there is plenty of discussion going on about Jack. He's a ticketing time bomb. He could go down at anytime. At least with Smith, when he comes back he will be fully healthy.

So doctors can be wrong? I'm not sure you're doing anyone any favors here.

The thing about discussing this is that everyone's body and recovery is different. We don't know if Smith will suffer any setbacks or if the nerve will start firing in a few weeks.

I do not see any reason to believe he won't eventually be on the field, but trying to predict when he'll be able to play is an exercise in futility. Not much different IMO than trying to predict who will get hurt this season.

I was just stating what was in the article. They sure didn't say he had a relapse on his knee.
Why be such a smartarse about it?
Anyway, Oct 16 to the end of December (when the reg. season ended) is not an entire year.

You are making big assumptions in both cases. No need for another discussion about how Smith's knee is just matter of time. We got too many threads already.

No one knows how long Jacks will play (Jeremiah trotter, Ron Leary) nor do we know IF Smith will come back and if he comes back to FULL health.

But hindsight is 20/20.. That's like saying would you take Tom Brady with your first round pick the year he came out instead of the sixth...

More like if Andrew Luck was hurt his last college year and someone gambled on him.

Thats a bad comparison. Luck hurt his finger the last game of the season. Now if Luck needed Tommy John surgery and had nerve damage in shoulder then it would be a good comparison.

The questions that remain are:
1. Did Sir Jones and the FO get assurances from both the player and doctors that this would be a short-term rehab?
2. Or did Sir Jones and the FO take one of the biggest gambles in recent draft history. This is not a late-round pick we are talking No. 2 and to draft a player with compound complications to the knee.

I see risk either way.
And a subsidiary question: Will we be looking at this pick in 2017 and shaking our heads at the enormity of the risk?
And a tributary to the subsidiary: Is Sir Jones on the cusp of senility?

Sean Spence has a similar injury to Jaylon Smith. If you watch the videos of the two, they're almost exactly the same. Both developed foot drop as a result of peroneal nerve issues.

* August 30, 2012 -- Spence suffered a torn ACL and LCL and dislocated his kneecap during the final preseason game. More devastating was the damage to his peroneal nerve.

* February, 2013 -- Nerve doctors informed the Steelers that Spence will never be the same.

* April 25, 2013 -- Linebackers coach Keith Butler, just after drafting inside linebacker Vince Williams, told reporters, "It will be miraculous if (Spence) does come back. It will be miraculous if he comes back next year."

* August 7, 2013 -- I told a re-habbing Spence that one of these days he's going to make me a great story. "I know," he said.

* October 16, 2013 -- Spence practiced for the first time since the injury, and one of his trainers called his showing "phenomenal." But Spence broke a finger and his recovery was halted.

* September 28, 2014 -- Spence will start at the mack inside linebacker position against Tampa Bay in place of injured rookie Ryan Shazier.

Obviously, no two players are alike, but I have seen people say he will be ready by July, and I just don't feel like that is the case. This is the closest example of any player having a similar injury in the NFL.

I think him missing a year sound logical. If he isnt back after a year, this is a complete bust. No way you come back after two years off and take the NFL by storm.

I don't disagree. Both are crap shoots. But I feel better about the chances that Smith will play and have no lingering issues than I do about Jack staying healthy and not having to have a very significant micro fracture surgery. I hope both pan out because they are both great players and the NFL needs great players.
