Season concerns

challenge for Super Bowls if ‘this’ or ‘that’ happens.

That is the central difference in opinion. Fans may see a 2018 roster that will struggle. Jones sees a roster that will end up holding a Lombardi if everything falls into place.
That's every team though. Success in the NFL is largely dependent on things falling into place. Philly last year, for instance, was really dependent on every FA signing and the rookies doing well. Turned out that it all worked, but they could have easily gone the other way if a few different things happened.

If Will Clay, Stephen and Jason all went to Jerry and said they needed a certain player, he would go get them.
Period

Maybe it would be nice if the a general manger not named jones and the coach could make decisions on certain players. But thats just me...

Don't forget Suh to the Rams 1 year 14.5M. That's not that cheap, but they're trying to make a run this year. We're probably not.

Maybe Jerry can take Stephen with him...

I don't think the Jones family would have be able to have anything to do with the team if Jerry was commish. Every close call would go our way. Suspend Wentze, just because ... lol

No way Jerry allows the "Golder Goose" to get away from his family. That is his legacy.

I think they're reluctant to pay high-priced free agents until they are sure about Dak.

I'm hoping they're still pursuing ET.

Really? Guess what...they are not and haven't been since the draft. Stephen and Jerry have said as much several times.

Guys,
Being a lifelong Cowboy as we all are, I'm having a really tough time figuring out how we make the playoffs.
The NFC is so strong this year, even better than last year. 10 wins are a must to even consider making the playoffs.

I just don't understand our team mindset. I agree with building through the draft, but we seem to ignore FA these days. We seem to be missing out on some real value, low risk players.
I still cant understand why we didn't take a risk with one year contracts?

Sheldon Richardson- Went to the Vikings
Mathieu- Went to Texans
Eifert- Stayed with Bengals
Mo Wilkerson- signed with Packers
Josh Sitton- 2 years 15 million guard signed with Fins

We are not taking advantage of Dak's contract. We have a stud RB and still great O-line who knows what happens over the next 3 years? Is Elliott going to get a second contract, will he even be good after how much we run him? Will the O-line stay healthy enough with Tyron & Travis Frederick. Jerry & Stephen have dropped the ball with not being aggressive in FA. Our draft has been good enough, but you gotta go out and round out your team in FA. Just like the Eagles did last year. Always improve your roster, don't keep saying we like what we have.

I honestly think we are doing just enough to stay afloat and make Jerry Jones a ton of free cash flow. The Cowboys name will carry him forever. He is a HOF'er now, has 3 SB's, most valuable sports franchise. I feel like he wants to be NFL commish more than an owner.

I have a bad feeling that things have the possibility of going really bad this year. I hope I'm wrong but I also don't want to win 8 games and be in the middle and really be in the same situation next year.
Who wants to be .500 and Jerry saying.. "lets run this back one more time". We are stuck with Clapper & company again. I would give JG an ultimatum, playoff win or bust.

Well said!

Oh yeah, I agree. I really can not see him wanting to commish at his age...

He would like to get another SB but, his main focus is filling that stadium every Sunday and adding another billion dollars to his coffers. Jerry is PT Barnham in drag.

 Thats great...

So essentially we have to hope we accidentally stumble to SB.

You did not mention Bridgewater to the Saints.

Those who do not understand Jerry Jones (or Stephen for that matter) after 29 years will never comprehend what he is thinking. In my opinion, Jones does not think he has built a competitive team. Jones always believes he has fielded teams that can challenge for Super Bowls if ‘this’ or ‘that’ happens.

That is the central difference in opinion. Fans may see a 2018 roster that will struggle. Jones sees a roster that will end up holding a Lombardi if everything falls into place.
Bingo!

This is a fundamental flaw in Jerry’s conflict of interest wearing both the owners and GM hat.

His owners role of eternal optimism promoting his brand outweighs his GM role planning for the worst case scenarios.

And why when it doesn’t meet his hopes he falls more into Damage Control mode because he’s not instinctive enough in football to see issues before they unfold.

I didn’t sense they were ever that interested in Earl.

Personally I’m concerned about his recent injury history.

And I like where our defense is headed. I don’t believe it’s a Safety away from greatness. I think it can be formidable as is without that big risk and commitment.

I’d rather us have gone after a TE or WR.

Well, it's been 25 years and I don't see one on the horizon. As long as we have bad coaching there will be no big
playoff wins with this team.

I see a ton of positives this season. I think Dallas will be one of the best teams not just in the NFC but the entire league. Let's look at our competition in the NFC

Vikings. Good team, good coaching but Dak has never lost to Cousins. Cousins will turn the ball over and our defense will hold the Vikings under 17 points. Giving the turnovers our offense will score points on them.

Saints. Young, fast and talented. They have an explosive offense with a running game and passing game. Our receivers will need to get open against their defense. I like our defense more but this game night have a ton of points scored. Will come down to who makes mistakes on offense and which defense can put pressure on the offense.

Carolina. With OL problems their offense won't be as explosive. They have a Playmaker in McCaffrey and on defense with Kuechly. Carolina might get shut out against our defense as we will create havoc against Newton.

Atlanta. They have had our number the past few games but with Zeke and a healthy Tyron we can score on them. No Green in this game please, I rather Rico play OT then Green in this game. Ryan will turn the ball over and I think Awuzie and Jones will have a great day against their receivers.

GB. Dak and Zeke have destroyed GB before. Granted in the playoffs we lost against them. Their defense isn't scary and their OL isn't the same. I think Gregory and Lawrence will be able to finally put pressure on Rodgers and Lewis won't fall for the same play 3 times in a row.

Rams. This team looks stacked on paper but will they have chemistry. They almost rebuilt the entire secondary, added Suh and Donald isn't happy with his current contract. We were beating them last season until Lee went out. In the second half we got destroyed. I'm more confident in our LB corps this year and believe we have the speed to contain Gurley.

San Fran, Seattle and Arizona. All 3 of these teams are rebuilding. I'm not sold on Jimmy G and think they will struggle to score, feed Zeke all game and we will by double digits. Seattle has Wilson and that's it, their defense isn't good at all and we should put 30 plus on them. Arizona will be the toughest of the 3 but they won't be playing our 2nd and 3rd stringers. Jaylon will have his hands full with Johnson but I like Jaylon's chances.

Chicago and Detroit. Trubisky just got a ton of weapons but not sold on their defense yet, talented on defense but don't see them containing Zeke and Dak. The Lions are the Lions, seems they might be able to run the ball but with our front 7 will force them to be one dimensional and I like our secondary to play well.

Tampa. Does this need explaining

That leaves the East.

Eagles. Don't have a healthy legit QB. They lost some pieces on defense and really don't see them being able to bring their success from last season to this season. Division games are tough but I think eagles will struggle, I have them in 2nd or 3rd place in the division and missing the playoffs.

Giants. Over hyped again this season. They have Odell, they have Barkley (who hasn't proven anything) but the main thing is they have benched for Geno Smith......Eli Manning. Eli will be the reason the Giants don't take a step forward and depending on how Barkley plays will decide if they finish ahead of Philly or behind them.

Commanders. Are trash, no reason why Dak doesn't sweep them again for his 3rd straight year. Alex Smith doesn't turn the ball over like Cousins but their receiving corps could be the worst in the NFL. Crowder and Richardson might get shut down against our secondary.

Our lack of playoff success has been more about a lack of talent than coaching this era.

In order to play for a championship need to be great on one side of the ball and at least above average to great on the other.

We haven’t had that balance this era even under better or more proven and experienced coaching.

I honestly think we are doing just enough to stay afloat and make Jerry Jones a ton of free cash flow.

Jerry has more money than God and owns the wealthiest franchise in sports. He's not pinching pennies to squeeze a couple more million - chump change to him - out of ticket sales.

Jerry wants to win, and no doubt has convinced himself that this team can win...just as he's done for years.

I mostly agree but generally believe ultimate success hinges upon multiple factors weighing equally with good fortune, such as appropriate coaching decisions, consistent level of player performance and non-critical roster injuries.

Yea, I think there are consistencies you can/should build in to help prepare for the what-ifs that go wrong.

I don't think Dallas does a particularly good job at that, but I do agree with Jerry that if things go right, this team could be a contender. I don't think the NFC is as potent at the top as some, and I think the Cowboys have a ton of upside. So IF things go right, there's not much reason why this team can't go 12-4 and make a run.
