Season Schedule

An owner might say they really want a 1PM home opener as opposed to a night game. One might say they want Week 3 on the road so they can have U2 come play at their stadium that night. The Cowboys special schedule request is we get to host a game on Thanksgiving on 4 days rest, which is why Jerry isn't fighting to open at home on the flip side.

i still dont understand.

Your saying we only play at home on thanksgiving because we agree not to open at home?

I'm saying if every owner in the league is pushing for a chance to open up at home that it's unlikely that we'll be granted the request because we already have our scheduling-gimme on Thanksgiving.

So your statement is that we don't get home games in week one because we get Thanksgiving at home? Is this just pure speculation on your part or do you have some source or a link that confirms this as fact?

thats tradition. Same as detroit. Its no gimme.

both organizations stepped up to the plate a long time ago and took these turkey games and turned them into what they are today, tradition.

it has nothing to do with our schedule.

in fact last year bill jones said he was told by the nfl front office that the cowboys had an odd schedule with all the home games in the second half because they thought the rangers would be in the playoffs again and it was a mess the precvious two octobers when they both played the same day.

so our schedule was odd. that wont be a problem this year. We should open and close at home this season.

I am hoping for a 3:15 home game against either philly, minnesota or the rams to start the season.....but i imagine they send us to philly to kick off there new regime with us as the homecoming team as usual.

I don't share your Rangers pessimism :)

Interesting I thought the schedules and times were determined by some master formula? Based on what you are saying wouldn't an owner request all his teams are in prime time? I really did not think an owner had so much input into when the games were played and at what times...interesting.

I agree winning is the one ulitmate goal but my point is would be nice to open at home and close at home for a change. Just does not work out in their favor like that very often.

I understand but I would just as soon have road games especially game up north early in the season before the fall and winter weather hit. If that means the opener is on the road in say Chicago great would rather play in Chicago in September as opposed to December. :D

Last year teams submitted more than 70 blocked out days because of stadium availability as well as more than 100 requests regarding preferred start times and requests about playing at home during the holidays.

Here's an article on the process: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000...katz-talks-requests-and-complaints-from-teams

That sounds nice on paper but is utterly meaningless. All that matters is getting in and if it comes down to it I'll take getting in by beating every cream puff on the schedule than sitting at home with a nice résumé. The 2007 Giants didn't look very playoff worthy with regular season losses to the Packers, Patriots, and Cowboys TWICE. Yet those were the three final teams they beat on the way to being champs. Macho posturing is stupid, give me the Panthers.

Has nothing to do with paper, We play the saints a very good team we have played them tough in recent games I respect them but do not fear them. I also think if you plan on getting to post season you better be good enough to beat good teams during the season. So to hell with the Saints bring them on,

In 2002 the Texans came into the league and the NFL went to its current format. That is 11 seasons full of opening season games and season finales.

Most times opened at home(out of 11):
1. Browns 10
2. Packers 8
2. Texans 8
2. Giants 8
2. Commanders 8
22. Lions 4
32. Cowboys 2

Most times closing out the season at home(out of 11):
1. Texans 9
2. Broncos 8
2. Chargers 8
4. Commanders 7
4. Eagles 7
18. Lions 5
30. Cowboys 3

Most home games combined(opener and finale)(out of 22):
1. Texans 17
2. Browns 16
3. Commanders 15
4. Patriots 14
4. Giants 14
25. Lions 9
32. Cowboys 5

Most times both opening and closing at home in the same season:
1. Texans 7
2. Commanders 6
3. Browns 5
4. Patriots 4
5. Packers 4
15. Lions 2
32. Cowboys 0(the only team not to have done this at least once since 2000)

Fewest times both opening and closing on the road in the same season:
1. Browns 0
2. Giants 0
3. Texans 1
3. Patriots 1
3. Packers 1
15. Lions 3
32. Cowboys 6

If there is some sort of unwritten agreement that Dallas gets the Thanksgiving game in exchange for not playing at home during season openers and season finales, then shouldn't it also apply to the Lions? It doesn't really look that way based on those numbers.

Also, the other teams who don't have a Turkey day game should all have about the same amount of home games, yet we see that some teams have more than others. For example, the Texans have played in 17 home games(out of 22 games) while during that same stretch, the Panthers, Seahawks and Jaguars have played in 8. Thanksgiving has no impact on these teams, so they should all be closer in spread.

Thanks for pulling that together. That's pretty amazing, really. I don't tend to subscribe to conspiracy theories, but...it's hard to believe this is just chance or random distribution. Maybe tv ratings? The Cowboys help insure a sellout as a road team? I dunno, that is some weird distribution pattern.

As in NO distribution. lol

The odds of every one them having us last must be many millions to 1.
No way it can be random.
That's not to say it's a conspircay either. There must be some sort of understanding. Maybe Thanksgiving day prime game (vs early one) is in play afterall.

All I know is that if the last game (always division game) of the season has meaning and it's on the road, your odds are much lower of winning. That is a fact and is indisputable.

On a side note, your odds of beating that same opponent on the road in the middle of the season would be higher than in a road all or nothing situation.

outstanding post.

I can tell u as a season ticket holder and a person living in north texas that how this is currently going it sucks for us here.

Training camp is in Los Angeles, which to me is a slap at the local fans. There are a million places in this state to have training camp where people like myself could drive to enjoy a day or two of practice and go home. Traveling to LA is unrealistic for most people.

Then we constantly open on the road sucking a good portion of the excitement of the start of the season because the damn cowboys never play here at the stadium, oh by the way we helped pay for....

then we never close out the season at home basically which is always an important game and it sucks.

Im tired of it to be honest. Camp should be in texas, to me it should be in Austin right in the middle of the state in one of the great art cities with all kinds of stuff to do and all the money stays here in the state. This team should get the opportunity to finish a season at home knowing these are always important games.

its not a coincidence that the only important season ender we have played at home in basically 10 years was the 09 eagles season finale which the team played great and the crowd was tremendous...We got to experience the excitement.

how many times do the giants, eagles and skins fans get to experience the excitement of the openers and finale's at home...?

we better open and close at home this year.

Great stuff exactly the point of this thread kudos for the research!!

The higher the stakes the harder it is to win on the road historically. No slipping into town and stealing one from the home team. I doubt the difference is dramatic though--we've seen plenty of road teams win playoff games. But for the most part, the higher the stakes the harder it is to steal a road win.
As you know, a home defense is greatly benefited when the opposing team can't hear the signals well (or at all). A home offense is comforable for the same reasons..with no real noise issues. Plus the added adrendaline factor--not early in the game because everyone has it--but late in the game with the grind going, when the crowd helps pull you through.

Of course, if you have a team like the 90s Cowboys, you could play on Mars and win.
At some point, if you're team is good enough, where you play is less of a factor.

Yeah I'm not going to ask for that much. But I would love to have one or the other. At the least, end the season at home. Three straight years to end the season on the road is ridiculous.
