The 12th Man cometh

Why I am glad the game is in Seattle: At the onset, I wondered if the fan base had to do with locale. My inner fan had to peer past the similarities between the two cities to understand better. While Seattle was settled in 1851, Dallas was founded in 1841. Seattle gets 38 inches of rain per year, Dallas 37.1. According to recent research, Seattle is the most literate city, having the highest percentage of college graduates and Dallas has the most...shopping centers per capita.

Yes, here in the Emerald City, the Puget Sound's 3.8 million 12th Men can proudly toast their lattes and listen to Nirvana, Heart, even Kenny G as he (or she) proudly drives to the game, passing down Skid Row to Nordstrom, Microsoft, Amazon.com, Boeing, Zymogenetics, heck--even UPS is home grown.

So what exists in Big D to cheer on the urban cowboys of the Bible Belt? What do they have to inspire their drawling 12th Man? While the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington area of 5.8 million people has 11 billionaires to boast, the fans must cruise past the corporate homes of 7-Eleven, Exxon-Mobil, Blockbuster, CompUSA, Zales, and finally, the home of the corn chip--Frito Lay.

When searching to discover why our 12th Man's roar was like no other, my inner fan's mind finally settled on an important difference between Dallas and Seattle. Conception. Which town is really the Wild West? There is a lingering idea the United States still clings to that we in the Pacific Northwest still ride horses and chew cud and are all slightly deranged to want to live in such a town which, honestly, doesn't get so much rain--and no, we don't all ride horses. Fans don't have to look any further than the very names of the teams to find out which of the two cities seem still firmly entrenched in the days of yee-haw yesteryear.

And come Saturday, the Cowboys are going to be moseying back down the trail to Texas, heads lowered in their 10-gallon hats, seated on their wagons with the roar of the 12th Man still ringing in their ears from the Qwest. Yes, the 12th Man will bring it. The 12th Man, Mr. Romo, will roar. Just ask Eli Manning. Or Jake Delhomme. Or Phillip Rivers. Gunslingers knocked silly by our beloved 12th Man.

Lee Trevino is also from El Paso , not Dallas . If he's just naming Texans , then he must have forgot about a guy named Ben Hogan .

This coming on the eave of a playoff game with a team from the land of Nothern Fruits and Nuts. From the land that gave us Grunge, New age, latte' and putting the "needs" of Owl and trees over people. From a city who's teams colors expemplify the citizens like no other, a cunfusing mish-mash of girly green, blue and faux-Cowboy silver that makes one want to vomit.
Harldey the week to write this colum. Could'a waited 'till a Steeler or Bear game at least.

Okay as someone who lives in Seattle but was born in Texas and loves his Cowboys I must confess that was fairly lame.

We aren't all bad up here in Seattle we are just a bit water logged from the recent winter.

I will be at Qwest Field wearing my brand new Romo jersey making as much noise as possible, but my god that stadium is loud!

Agree on Pearl Jam. Black and Evenflow are good songs. Nirvana is okay. Alice In Chains I do like.

From time to time, Seattle articles slam Vancouver, which has a lot more going for it. So the article is pretty much in character for up there.

I've been to Seattle twice, including a visit of nearly a month. What really lingers is the stark contrast betwixt the stunning natural beauty of the area, and the rudeness of the people who populate it. I was so grateful to get back to a place where people made eye contact, smiled, and generally comport themselves with civility.

Give me Dallas over Seattle-- and I'm not just talking about where I prefer to hang my hat either!

they showed Darrell some love.
I respect that.
As for Seattle...

1.The city is so boring they had to start a coffee chain to keep you awake.
2.Kurt Cobain killed himself in Seattle in 1994.Had he been in Dallas,he would have been too busy celebrating the Cowboys back to back Super Bowl wins.
3.It doesn't rain in Seattle,it's God Pissing on Seattle.
4.There are no rednecks in Seattle, just white trash they call wetnecks.
5.High suicide rate in Seattle?I guess they are trying to beat Mt.Rainier to the punch.
6.Catching fish in the market?..That's entertainment in Seattle.
7.Jimi Hendrix was from Seattle. He left and only went back after he died.
8.It was either Seattle or a Ham sandwich for Mama Cass, she chose the sandwich.
9.How bad is Seattle? There is a reason the people of the US put it as far as they could hoping no one would venture there.
10.Phone calls from Seattle to Hell are considered local calls.

Seattle is just Vancouver without mountains and with highways. We like to think of Seattle as a little village that wants to be like Vancouver.

Weren't Soundgarden and the Presidents of the United States of America also from Seattle?

boy, they got the part in bold right.

It's also the movie Seattle loves best. Go figure.

"Frasier was so much better right?" He couldn't even nail his horn dog producer, Roz. Girly man.

Reality TV as a category? Tells you all you need to know about Seattle entertainment doesn't it? Moving on...

Did anyone besides me see this as envy?

Well, good for the Columbia Center. Our stadium will kick the butt of anything in your fair city.

Who's the best bass player born in Seattle? I confess I don't even know.

What the hell is this about? Was their claim to fame in this category Tiny Tim and his mandolin? If it is would anyone care or be in awe?

At least they acknowledge he was great.

The "Peerless City" melts their butter huh?

Uh, hello...Ben Hogan? Holy crap, Trevino is from El Paso.

No love for Angie Harmon? Or is she not a vixen?

Has Seattle had a sprinte of note?

Okay, this one is actually funny.

Tasteless.

I'll take Dallas 5 Super Bowl wins over everythign Seattle has ever accomplished in sports put together.

The Cowboys too. How soon they forget.

Cities that actually are...

Thank you and goodnight.

Good for you you should send it to that meat head
