Most guaranteed money in NFL history: Tom Brady, $57 million; Tony Romo, $55 million; Drew Brees, $55 million: Joe Flacco, $51 million.

I know the other thread is ongoing but this is for a specific subtopic of the event, that being Tony receiving the second most guaranteed contract in NFL history... second to Tom Brady. This probably deserves it's own thread as it is very interesting due to it showing 1) how highly the team values him, 2) he must have not been offering any "home team discount", 3) his "down" year last year, 4) yes... it has to be mentioned, him having one playoff win when the others have a ring.

I personally am not outraged, I am a bit bitter that Tony didn't offer a home town discount, especially when considering Texas has no state income tax so his 18m a season is closer to 20M in other state. If you calculate that in (of course, fairly you can't), Tony received about a 120M contract. However it's not my money and he is obviously looking at securing his family's ultra wealthy status. Can't blame him.

You want Romo to give a hometown discount to a team that refuses, year after year, to put an NFL caliber oline around him?

He actually did give us a huge discount. His money is backloaded in two very voidable years. If you looked at this contract when details are revealed, you'll see the first 3-4 years are significantly less than the last 2 on average.

Is that confirmed or just rumored at this point? I haven't seen any solid year to year numbers.

Well, yes. As is it looks like he charged a premium instead of a discount when you factor in the tax discount.

Well one of the points of the extension is to greatly reduce the current cap hit so...

I'm not sure why anyone calls things hometown discounts just because it's for the team he currently plays for.

My idea of a hometown discount would be a player taking less money to play for a team from his hometown or home area. Tony Romo is not from the Dallas area or Texas at all so I don't see why anything he does would be considered a hometown discount anyway.

That said I'm not sure how I feel about the contract. I love Romo and definately didn't want to lose him and it looks like the numbers are not real bad for the cap over the length of the deal.

I'm just not sure about signing a 32 year old QB to a 6 year extention, especially if this team continues to refuse to put a serious effort toward seriously upgrading the offensive line.

He only is taking $1.5 million in base salary this year. That is a "hometown discount."

Wouldn't be surprised if his base is similar to that next year, or set up to be restructured where it will be similar to that and open up more space next year.

Worth every penny. Tony doesn't owe this team anything after what he has to deal with in terms of the OLine and the fanbase.

tony gave a hometown discount on his last deal. but the guaranteed portion may very well be in the teams favor. if those a salaries and not bonus's then that works to the teams advantage because it's not spread out, thus lower the cap hit down the road

This is temporary until the next round of contracts.
If people haven't figured this out after all these years ay e they should quit commenting on the topic.

Hell, until Rodgers' inevitable deal, which I'd bet will be done before the draft.

IIRC, he's restructured his contract several times to try and help the team and he's also taking a base salary of about 1.5 million dollars for the first year of the deal. That's your "hometown discount" right there.

There's is zero reason for Romo, or any player, to offer a team a discount. That's ridiculous.

I mean, if the player enjoys it there and really wants to help the team win, those are both good reasons there.. but i agree its not like they should be required to offer any kind of fictional "hometown discount" because the team/fanbase really wants them to.

True. It's downright stupid.

So this basically looks like a 5 yr/$79.5M deal, or a $16M/yr contract, with two fluff years added in 2018 and 2019.

That is counting 2013 plus the first four years of the extension. Those are the years that the signing bonus will prorated for. It looks like most or all of the guaranteed money is in the first three years.

At first glance, it looks like the team could part ways after year four (after 2016) without huge pain. Of course, they could also restructure after this year and push more cap hits/pain into later years.

Those two final years of $40M unguaranteed, that Tony will never see, are making everyone's head explode. It's a $16M/yr deal with most of the guaranteed money front loaded to make it more Romo friendly, with some team flexibility later on.

$16M/year is actually a lot less than many here were predicting. It's more than I had originally guessed a few weeks ago. But $16M/year sounds pretty reasonable, somewhere between Matt Schaub and the top tier QB's.
