LOL.....notice his punting average

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brett_Maher_(American_Football)

Hamilton Tiger-Cats[edit]
Maher signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the 2016 season following attending a team mini-camp and he made the team in training camp.[10]He completed 82% of his field goal attempts that season, going 41 for 50, and had a punt average of 45.9 yards.[11]

Cleveland Browns[edit]
On March 20, 2017, Maher signed with the Cleveland Browns.[12] On May 2, 2017, Maher was released by the Browns.[13]

Ottawa Redblacks[edit]
Maher returned to Ottawa for the 2017 season, achieving the same completion percentage as the previous season in Hamilton (82%), recording the same amount of field goals (41) on 50 attempts. His punt average was 46.7 yards.[14]

I liked "Money" too, but let's look at the facts:

The Cowboys didn't cut 2015 Dan Bailey. They cut 2018 Dan Bailey.

His first five seasons he only missed 12 FGs from 40+. The last two years he missed 8.

Touchback % on kickoffs:

2015 - 67%
2016 - 62 %
2017 - 57%

FG %:

2015 - 94%
2016 - 84%
2017 - 75%

I’m shouting this from the rooftops but no one is listening. An 82% percentage over the past two years with a long of 58 yards. Big leg who can hit those 50+ yard field goals. Most of the 18% he missed were over 45 yards.

In the CFL he played both kicker and punter and averaged 46 yards per punt. That’d have put him at 10th in the NFL last year. If we didn’t have such a great punter, I’d let him do both and pick up that extra roster spot.

If 2017 was anomaly, then we cut the better kicker ... even the 2016 version of Bailey. As the two posts show, Bailey hit 84 percent of his field goals that year, and the best Maher has done is 82.

The problem is that we don't know if 2017 was an anomaly.

Might help him that he doesn't have to concern himself with punting. Can just focus on his place-kicking.

What is the ROI given the salary difference though. Unless Bailey is back to pro bowl level he probably isn't worth it.

I kept thinking in the PS this guy is good. I was curious why he was kicking so much. I guess it was a tryout after all.

I don't know. If Bailey would hit 84 percent to Maher's 82, that could be the difference in a victory and a loss. If he's closer to normal, which is 93 percent, that could be a few victories.

I keep the more accurate kicker, even at a higher cost, but I don't know if I can say Bailey is the more accurate kicker now.

Yeah at 93 percent I would agree. He obviously missed some in camp

Keep on talking yourself into it.

Facts are pretty simple. He is a career journeyman. We have a first year ST coach who does not know what he is doing.

This was a financial thing, first and foremost and nobody was going to protest it.

on top of this might have chronic back problems at age of 30. This cut hurts because we have been hearing forever that Dan was 2nd most accurate kicker in history but Dallas is correctly trying to get ahead of curve on player decline. Similar to making same decision on Dez.

Sorry, some knucklehead is screaming from a nearby roof.

Were you saying something??

I hope we find out that he hasn’t recovered from the groin injury.. Makes no sense to cut him now for money reasons unless we are going to sign someone.

it is risky not to have backup k/p though

He had a groin injury last year, they brought him back too soon and he missed 3 kicks. You can't put that on him.

Except you, apparently.
